Guava borer worm (Lepidoptera: Cossidae), a limiting pest in guava: biology, lifecycle and management alternatives

Abstract: In 2006, a new limiting pest in guava was reported in the provincia de Vélez , Santander, Colombia, known as the borer worm. There is no knowledge of the biology of this pest so far. The aim of this study, conducted between May 2013 and December 2014, was to establish the taxonomy, lifecycle, damage (distribution, incidence, and severity), and control alternatives of this new limiting pest in guava, as input for an integrated management program. “…A sample of 96 eggs was examined, which were isolated and placed in Petri dishes. Morphology, color (Munsell color tables) and size (widthheight) data were recorded using a stereoscope and a microscope with a micrometric 1: 100 mm ratio at 4X and 10X magnification (Pulido-Blanco et al, 2019). The number of hatches and non-viable eggs were checked daily, according to the method of Sarmiento-Naizaque et al (2016).…”

“…The larvae collected (n ¼ 359) were measured using an entomological vernier to register and establish ranges by size (Pulido-Blanco et al, 2019). The intervals were established with a confidence level of 95%, corresponding to insects of small (5.1 AE 0.47 mm in length, α ¼ 0.05, n ¼ 50), medium (10.63 AE 0.31 mm long, α ¼ 0.05, n ¼ 76) and large sizes (14.29 AE 0.25 mm long, α ¼ 0.05, n ¼ 70).…”
