Significant progress has been made in AI over the past decade, but its application in clinical care remains limited. However, ChatGPT, an advanced language model developed by OpenAI, shows great promise in medicine and can significantly impact medical surveys by improving data collection and generating valuable insights for better healthcare outcomes. ChatGPT has the potential to enhance survey research by assisting in various aspects, including survey design, sampling, data cleaning, analysis, and reporting, improving the quality and efficiency of the research process. AI chatbots like ChatGPT in survey administration can enhance response rates and participant engagement, providing a better user experience and capturing more comprehensive data. Numerous studies have demonstrated ChatGPT's impressive performance in clinical reasoning exams, addressing complex questions in pathology, microbiology, and life support scenarios, making it a valuable tool for data analysis and decision-making in healthcare. While using ChatGPT in medical surveys offers advantages such as accessibility, language versatility, knowledge democratization, and efficiency, there are also disadvantages, including response sensitivity, data limitations, accuracy concerns, bias, and limited access to recent literature. Ethical concerns in AI healthcare include privacy issues, mistrust in AI systems, societal prejudices, and racial biases, which can be addressed through privacy protection measures, transparency, trust-building efforts, bias mitigation strategies, and involving relevant stakeholders in the process.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the corporate online training sector has increased exponentially and online course providers had to implement innovative solutions to be more efficient and provide a satisfactory service. This paper considers a real case study in implementing a chatbot, which answers frequently asked questions from learners on an Italian e-learning platform that provides workplace safety courses to several business customers. Having to respond quickly to the increase in the courses activated, the company decided to develop a chatbot using a cloud-based service currently available on the market. These services are based on Natural Language Understanding (NLU) engines, which deal with identifying information such as entities and intentions from the sentences provided as input. To integrate a chatbot in an e-learning platform, we studied the performance of the intent recognition task of the major NLU platforms available on the market with an in-depth comparison, using an Italian dataset provided by the owner of the e-learning platform. We focused on intent recognition, carried out several experiments and evaluated performance in terms of F-score, error rate, response time, and robustness of all the services selected. The chatbot is currently in production, therefore we present a description of the system implemented and its results on the original users’ requests.

An Exploratory Study on a Reinforcement Learning Prototype for Multimodal Image Retrieval Using a Conversational Search Interface

In the realm of information, conversational search is a relatively new trend. In this study, we have developed, implemented, and evaluated a multiview conversational image search system to investigate user search behaviour. We have also explored the potential for reinforcement learning to learn from user search behaviour and support the user in the complex information seeking process. A conversational image search system may mimic a natural language discussion with a user via text or speech, and then assist the user in locating the required picture via a dialogue-based search. We modified and improved a dual-view search interface that displays discussions on one side and photos on the other. Based on the states, incentives, and dialogues in the initial run, we developed a reinforcement learning model and a customized search algorithm in the back end that predicts which reply and images would be provided to the user among a restricted set of fixed responses. Usability of the system was validated using methodologies such as Chatbot Usability Questionnaire, System Usability Scale, and User Experience Questionnaire, and the values were tabulated. The result of this usability experiment proved that most of the users found the system to be very usable and helpful for their image search.
