GTA: Groupware task analysis — Modeling complexity

Abstract: The task analysis methods discussed in this presentation stem from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Ethnography (as applied for the design of Computer Supported Cooperative Work-CSCW), different disciplines that often are considered conflicting approaches when applied to the same design problems. Both approaches have their strength and weakness, and an integration of them does add value to the early stages of design of cooperation technology. In order to develop an integrated method for groupware task anal… Show more

“…Task models, such as those described by ConcurTaskTrees (CTT) (Paternò, 2000) or GTA (Van der Veer et al, 1996), can provide useful support. In terms of granularity, tasks can be elementary tasks (namely, tasks that are considered as a logically atomic entity which cannot be further refined) and structured tasks (namely, tasks whose specification consists in a decomposition and a refinement of a number of logically connected, smaller sub-tasks).…”

“…Van der Veer et al [134] created a conceptual framework for the design of an interactive system, which envisioned a three staged modelling methodology. At the first step, the designer creates a first task model (Task Model 1) from the domain knowledge and the work practice.…”

“…In the area of modelling groupware mechanisms Groupware Task Analysis [8] should be mentioned, as it is a method that emphasizes on studying groupware systems and their activities rather than studying single users. It considers three different aspects: agents, which often indicate people, either individuals or groups, but may also refer to systems; work, which can be split into different tasks, with different levels of complexity, from the lowest task level people refer to their work, the 'unit task' (which is often role-related), and complex tasks, which may be split up between agents or roles; situation: the current situation for the performance of a certain task, which involves describing the environment (physical, conceptual, and social) and the objects in such environment.…”
