GSTP1 I105V Polymorphism and Susceptibility to Colorectal Cancer in Kashmiri Population

Abstract: The glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzyme encoded by the GSTP1 gene is one of the critical enzymes involved in detoxification of carcinogens. The substitution of isoleucine to valine residue at position 105 of the GSTP1 protein results in decreased enzyme activity and hence less capability of effective detoxification. Hence, we investigated the role of GSTP1 I105V polymorphism in modulating the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) associated in a Kashmiri population. We designed a case-control study in which 86 CR… Show more

“…Previous investigations reported conflicting findings of this polymorphism to the risk of GIC in different populations. Rsa I polymorphism has been reported to increase susceptibility to colorectal cancer in Kashmir population in India 24. A study in the Fujian province of China revealed that the presence of c2 allele elevated the risk for gastric cancer, but was found as a protective factor for oesophageal squamous cell cancer in another study in China 3 5.…”

“…Khabaz [ 24 ] in Saudia Arabia also found no relationship between any of these three genotypes and CRC risk. Studies in Bulgaria [ 25 ] and on the population of Kashmir [ 26 ] also found no relationships between GSTP1 genotypes and CRC. However, Gorukmez [ 9 ] showed that the GSTP1 Ile/Ile genotype occurred more often in controls than in patients.…”

“…GSTP1, which is involved in the detoxification of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, has been investigated extensively in relation to different types of cancer, such as breast cancer [57], [58], bladder cancer [59], [60], oesophageal cancer [61], [62], and so on [5]. Previous results of the studies on the association of GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphism with prostate cancer risk were inconclusive.…”
