Growth variation in the endangered fish Zingel asper: Contribution of substrate quality, hydraulics, prey abundance, and water temperature

Abstract: 1. Intraspecific variation in life histories and its environmental correlates can indicate the degree of vulnerability to extinction of endangered taxa and guide conservation actions. 2. Zingel asper (Percidae) is an endangered fish endemic to the Rhône catchment (France and Switzerland), where five populations subsist in separate river systems (Loue, Beaume, Durance, Verdon, and Doubs). Two populations of Z. asper differ in growth and longevity, but the existence of broader intraspecific differentiation in li… Show more

“…Additionally, the diet of young‐of‐the‐year Z. asper was mostly composed of smaller prey like chironomids (Orthocladiinae) (Figure 1 ). The availability of smaller prey may therefore be important during the first year of growth of Z. asper (Monnet et al, 2022 ) until they can transition to larger, potentially more beneficial prey (i.e., B. fuscatus and Ecdyonurus ). Moreover, chironomids are similarly important for the autumnal diet shift of adults.…”

“…It is currently found in the Durance, Verdon, Ardeche, Loue and Doubs river systems. Zingel asper is a small, short-lived species, with the adult size typically varying from 12 to 20 cm [17,18] and a life-span ranging from 3 to 6 years [19,20]. The typical habitat of Z. asper is characterised by small to medium-sized rivers, with gravel bottoms [17,21,22].…”
