Growth status of schoolchildren in a rural Zapotec community in the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, in 1968 and 1978

Abstract: Stature, weight, arm circumference, triceps skinfold and estimated mid-arm muscle circumference were compared in schoolchildren, 6 to 14 years of age, in 1968 and 1978. The children were resident in a rural Zapotec-speaking community in the Valley of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. There were no differences in stature, weight and arm circumference over the ten-year period. Triceps skinfold and estimated mid-arm muscle circumference showed small, significant changes. Multiple classification analysis, adjusting for a… Show more

“…The growth status of children resident in two Colonias in the city of Oaxaca and in two indigenous communities in the Valley of Oaxaca did not differ significantly (Malina et al, 1981). Further, growth status of primary school children from a rural indigenous community in the Valley of Oaxaca indicated no secular change in body size between 1968 and 1978 (Malina et al, 1980(Malina et al, , 2004b. The observations on children in Oaxaca are consistent with several studies in other regions of Mexico indicating negligible secular changes over similar intervals.…”

“…Height, weight, arm circumference, triceps skinfold, and estimated midarm muscle circumference of the school children have been previously reported (Malina et al, 1980). Other anthropometric dimensions, including sitting height, skeletal breadths, additional circumferences and cranial measurements (Buschang, 19801, as well as motor performance (Malina and Ruschang, 19851, have also been reported.…”

“…Dietary and anthropometric surveys i n Guatemala and elsewhere in Central America demonstrate consistently that low SES Ladinos and low SES Indians suffer from chronic undernutrition (INCAP, 1969;Martorell et al, 1976;Malina et al, 1980;Bogin and MacVean, 1981). The stress of undernutrition is compounded by increased incidence of infectious disease (Scrimshaw et al, 1968).…”
