Introducción. Las dimensiones corporales básicas (estatura, peso e índice de masa corporal) de niños, niñas y adolescentes son indicadores indispensables tanto en el ámbito de la salud, como en procesos de selección de talentos deportivos. Objetivos. Identificar y sintetizar los estudios originales de investigación sobre dimensiones corporales básicas en niños, niñas y adolescentes de 2 a 18 años publicados entre 2003 y 2018. Materiales y métodos. Se realizó una búsqueda de la literatura en PubMed, Epistemonikos y Google Académico entre mayo de 2017 y junio de 2018. Se buscaron artículos originales de investigación en inglés, español o portugués que abordaran el perfil morfológico, que hubieran utilizado como criterio de referencia las dimensiones corporales básicas o las de la condición física; que en su población de estudio incluyeran niños, niñas y adolescentes de 2 a 18 años, y que hubieran sido publicados entre 2003 y 2018 en revistas con factor de impacto y de libre acceso. Resultados. Se encontraron 18 artículos que describían el perfil morfológico en niños, niñas y adolescentes de 2 a 18 años, todos de corte transversal. De estos, 5 se realizaron en Colombia y los 13 restantes en países o regiones de América, Europa y Asia. Conclusión. La presente revisión sistemática permitió establecer un valor de referencia para las variables estatura, peso e IMC, y destacó la variabilidad del perfil morfológico básico asociada con el sexo, la edad y el país de evaluación.

Background: Early identification of childhood malnutrition is imperative to improve overall health outcomes, and more importantly, to start early intervention to decrease the risk of future complications. This study aimed to evaluate new malnutrition Z-score growth indicators for detecting pediatric malnutrition and degrees of severity and compare their accuracy with that of growth chart centiles. Patients and Methods: This retrospective study included 475 pediatric patients from several pediatric nutrition clinics for six months. The participant's weight, height, age, and growth parameters were recorded using both traditional growth charts (centiles) and updated malnutrition indicators (z-scores). The percentage and degree of malnutrition using centiles and Z-scores were compared. Results: In children aged <2 years, the percentage of malnutrition was 4.7% higher when measured using new malnutrition indicators (weight-for-length Z-score) compared with (weight-for-length centiles). Our results also showed 9.6% higher number of malnourished children >2 years of age when BMI-for-age Z-score was used compared to weight-for-height centiles while there were 15.8% higher malnourished children when BMI-for-age Z-score was compared to BMI-for-age centiles for the same group. We found a significant difference (X2 = 202.548, P=<.0001) between the degree of malnutrition in children aged >2 years using BMI-for-age Z-score (normal vs. malnourished) and the degree of malnutrition using BMI centiles (normal vs. malnourished). Approximately 34% of the children classified as normal using centiles were classified as malnourished using Z-scores. Comparing the degrees of Malnutrition, approximately 23% (45 of 196) of children classified as normal based on centiles were classified as having mild malnutrition when Z-scores were used, and 42% (80 of 192) of children who were classified as having mild malnutrition based on centiles were classified as having moderate malnutrition when Z-scores were used. Conclusions: In our study, a higher percentage of children showed malnutrition when assessed using the Z-score (BMI-for-age for children >2 years/weight-for-length for children <2 years of age) than the centiles growth chart.

Background To date, there are insufficient data on long-term outcomes of weight loss surgery in children and adolescents with obesity beyond 5 years of follow-up. This study aimed to analyze durability of weight loss and comorbidity resolution, growth velocity, and adverse events associated with laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in children and adolescents with severe obesity. Study Design In this prospective cohort study, 2,504 children and adolescents with class II/III obesity who were enrolled in a multidisciplinary, family-based pediatric obesity management program underwent LSG between 2008 and 2021. Weight loss, growth, comorbidity resolution, and adverse event data during the first 10 years after LSG were analyzed. Results The cohort age was 5 to 21 years at the time of operation, and 55% were female. Mean ± SD percentage of excess weight lost during short- (1 to 3 years; n = 2,051), medium- (4 to 6 years; n = 1,268), and long-term (7 to 10 years; n = 632) follow-up was 82.3% ± 20.5%, 76.3% ± 29.1%, and 71.1% ± 26.9%, respectively. Complete comorbidity remission at long-term follow-up was observed in 74%, 59%, and 64% of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension cases, respectively. Mean ± SD height z-score change at short-, medium-, and long-term follow-up was 0.1 ± 0.5, 0.1 ± 1.2, and 0.0 ± 0.8, respectively, representing no significant change in growth velocity. There were 27 adverse events (1%) with no procedure-related mortality. Conclusions Long-term follow-up after LSG in children and adolescents demonstrates durable weight loss, maintained comorbidity resolution, and unaltered growth. Visual Abstract
