Growth Rate Measurements of Organic Crystals in a Cone‐Shaped Fluidized‐Bed Cell

Abstract: Knowledge of crystal growth rates and the factors that affect these rates is often an essential prerequisite for designing industrial processes that yield a desired crystalline product. Herein, the effects of saturation temperature, supersaturation, and seed‐crystal size on the overall linear growth rate of L‐alanine were examined by using a cone‐shaped fluidized‐bed cell. For a systematic investigation, a “design of experiment” approach was applied that used a two‐level full‐factorial design. It was found tha… Show more

“…According to the procedure presented by Ostermann et al, l -alanine seed crystals were prepared . A mixture of ethanol and ultrapure water with a volume ratio of 4/1 and ethanol absolute (Merck KGaA, absolute EMPLURA) both at 25 °C were utilized as wash liquids as described by Terdenge and Wohlgemuth. , For subsequent drying, the washed crystals were transferred to a crystallizing dish and predried in a drying oven at 50 °C.…”

“…For the CVSF characterization experiments, recrystallized and sieved (355–560 μm, ε = 0.451) L -alanine (Evonik Industries AG, 99.7% purity, ρ S = 1420 kg m –3 ) crystals were resuspended in a saturated L -alanine/water solution (ρ ML = 1042 kg m –3 , η ML = 1.61 mPa s) at a room temperature of approximately 21 °C. The L -alanine crystals were prepared as presented by Ostermann et al…”

“…As solid phase, L-alanine seed crystals are employed that are prepared according to Ostermann's procedure [29]. Here, practicable crystal product sizes attainable in the ATC comprise sieve fractions 100-160 µm and 250-315 µm.…”
