Growth Promotion in Pea Stem Sections. II. By Natural Oils & Isoprenoid Vitamins

Abstract: The elongation of pea stem sections brought about by indoleacetic acid (IAA) and gibberellic acid (GA3) can be increased considerably by trace quantities of a large number of fatty acid esters and chemically related compounds (19,21). The emulsifying teclhnique used for these alkyl lipids has permitted the studv of the effect of some natural oils and of fatsoluble vitamins on pea stem section growth for the first time. In this paper it is shown that vitamins K, and E, and some related isoprenoid compounds, are… Show more

“…But as we showed earlier, even readily metabolized esters of fatty acids contribute no more than a few per cent to the increased CO. output they initiate (11). Moreover, isoprenoids, which are supposed to enter quite different pathways of metabolism, are comparably effective to these alkane derivatives (20).…”

“…These are known to be membrane constituents, include well known animal hormones, and some have linear dimensions exceeding 20 A. Accordingly, three groups selected to represent major chemical types (4) and lengths (25) Figure 1, it can be seen that their over-all dimensions fall within a narrow range.…”

“…The bioassay used has been described previously (32). Brieflv, 10 mm sections cut from just below the apex of 7 Measuring the sections treated with I again after 16 hr more incubation revealed only a uniform growth increment in all treatments.…”

“…All are nonionizable, but contain a polar group such as an ester or hydroxyl moiety. Natural compounds which are physiologically active include such substances as triglycerides, a-tocopherol, vitamin K1, and phytol (32). Representative synthetic substances which also are active in the bioassay include methyl oleate, some Tween detergents, and monoolein (31).…”
