“…Wojtysiak et al (2010) reported no significant differences in colour parameters between males, castrate males and females. Meat colour parameters of Awassi, Morkaraman (Esenbuga et al 2009), Kivircik (Koyuncu and Kara Uzun 2009) and Bafra (Yakan and Unal 2010) lambs are generally similar to what was observed in the present study. The chroma (C*) and hue angles (H°) are more closely related to visual appearance.…”

“…The average daily weight gain of male lambs was higher (65 g) than that of female lambs (p<0.05). The results obtained from the present study on daily weight gain for Karayaka lambs especially male lambs were higher than several estimates at the same age reported in the literature, for example, some Turkish sheep breeds such as Awassi, Morkaraman and Kivircik lambs reported by Esenbuga et al (2009) and Koyuncu and Kara Uzun (2009) and Bafra lambs which were developed by backcrossing between Chios and Karayaka (Yakan and Unal 2010). Boggs and Merkel (1993) noted that average range of depth of fat (fat thickness) over the eye muscle and area of eye muscle should range between 5.08 and 12.7 mm and 38.1 and 91.4 mm 2 between 12th and 13th rib, respectively.…”

“…Conversely, there were no significant differences observed between K and R lambs in all periods. The results obtained from the present study on birth weight, especially for K, KM, HM breeds were higher than several estimates in the literature, for example, Koyuncu et al (1999), Cemal et al (2005), Koyuncu & Uzun (2009). ADG is one of the most important indicators of the profitability of lamb production in both pre-and post-weaning periods.…”

“…Th e main native sheep breed of the Th race and Marmara regions of Turkey is Kivircik (Kaymakci 2006). Th e Karacabey Merino was obtained by crossbreeding the German Mutton Merino with indigenous Kivircik sheep at the Karacabey State Farm (Yalcin 1986).…”
