Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics and Meat Yield of Boer Goats Fed Diets Containing Leaves or Whole Parts of Andrographis paniculata

Abstract: The study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding diets containing Andrographis paniculata leaves (APL), whole Andrographis paniculata plant (APWP) and a control without Andrographis paniculata (AP0), on growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat yield of 24 intact Boer bucks. The results obtained indicated that inclusion of Andrographis paniculata significantly improved feed intake, weight gain, feed efficiency and live weight. The ratios of carcass to fat, lean to bone, lean to fat, and co… Show more

“…In addition, Yusuf et al . [35] reported that a heavier carcass was due to higher feed intake and better weight gain. Kacang goats are a local Indonesian goat that has a small body size (Kacang means that the goat is as small as a peanut); therefore, the carcass weight is also low.…”

“…Andrographis paniculata (AP), called ‘king of bitters’ is a medicinal plant that is native to Asia [ 7 ]. The PSMs in different parts of AP [ 7 – 9 ] and the effects of AP on in vitro rumen metabolism [ 9 ] and growth performance in goats [ 10 ] have been documented. However, information regarding the effects of AP on in vivo rumen metabolism and nutrient digestibility in ruminants is very scarce.…”

“…Results of other studies showed that the loin eye area on lamb varied from 4.22-7.69 cm 2 (Duldjaman, 2005). Wider variation was reported by Yusuf et al (2014) from 4.79±0.10 to 9.08±0.64 cm 2 . The results of Brady et al (2003) research showed that the loin eye area ranged from 11.61-25.60 cm 2 , this variation was due to the differences in breed and final body weight.…”
