Growth of Turbot (Psetta Maxima L.) in the Northern Part of the Lithuanian Economic Zone in the Baltic Sea

Abstract: For the establishment of turbot age and growth rate otoliths were used. Growth in length and in weight was described by von Bertalanffys equation on the basis of the data obtained by back calculation. The carried out investigations revealed the existing differences in male and female growth rate. The rate of turbot growth in length is the highest in its first two years of life, while the difference between the male and female growth rate becomes more apparent in the third year. The greatest growth in weight of… Show more

“…Higher growth rates are commonly found in southern areas of species distribution (e.g. Déniel, 1990; Arneri et al., 2001; Stankus, 2001; Vinagre et al., 2008a, Vinagre et al., 2009). Several factors may influence this parameter.…”

“…Several authors reported a correlation between temperature and growth on various flatfish species, with special emphasis on latitudinal gradients (e.g. Déniel, 1990; Pauly, 1994; Arneri et al., 2001; Stankus, 2001; Vinagre et al., 2008a). Timing of spawning for several species is also correlated with temperature (e.g.…”

“…Szlakowski (1990) reported a maximum length of 48 cm for females and 32 cm for males in the Pomeranian Bay (Baltic Sea). The largest specimen measured in the Lithuanian waters of the Baltic Sea was 52.5 cm (Stankus 2001), although it should be noted that all marine fi sh attain smaller sizes in the this brackish-water see. Length values increased up to 70 cm in the Mediterranean and Black Sea.…”

“…Szlakowski (1990) studied 159 turbot samples and reported their maximum age as 9 (female) and 7 (male) in the Pomeranian Bay. However, Stankus (2001) stated that for total 720 turbots in the Baltic Sea (northern part of the Lithuanian zone), the maximum age among females was 16 years and males was 11 years. At the same time, for total 227 turbots in the Adriatic Sea, the maximum age was reported as 18 years by Arneri et al (2001).…”
