Growth of the Sayram Lake and retreat of its water-supplying glaciers in the Tianshan Mountains from 1972 to 2011

Abstract: Inland lakes and alpine glaciers are important constituents of water resources in arid and semiarid regions. Understanding their variations is critical for both an accurate evaluation of the dynamic changes of water resources and the retrieval of climatic information. On the basis of earlier researches, this study investigated the growth of the Sayram Lake and the retreat of its water-supplying glaciers in the Tianshan Mountains using long-term sequenced remote sensing images. Our results show that over the pa… Show more

“…For example, since 2002, the increased number and area of alpine glacial lakes in Uzbekistan have primarily been caused by rising temperatures (Petrov et al, 2017). The same situation has occurred in the Syrdarya River basin in the central TS (Zheng et al, 2019) and Sayram Lake in the northern TS (Cheng et al, 2016).…”

“…Since the 1970s, lakes in the HMA have generally expanded (Cheng et al, 2016;Kapitsa et al, 2017;Zhang et al, 2017;Zhang et al, 2019a). This was mainly related to the significant increase in precipitation and decrease in evaporation, which resulted in a much greater increase in water volume (Zhang et al, 2013).…”

“…In Central Asia, the mountainous areas mainly distribute in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The mountainous areas are the main water resources for the most rivers in Central Asia (Ran et al, 2015;Cheng et al, 2016). With the increasing elevation, the temperature decreases while the precipitation increases.…”

“…The traditional way is to set up monitoring sites and measuring lake dynamics (e.g., water level). For instance, in Bosten Lake and Sayram Lake, lake level data were used to analyze temporal and spatial variation [14,15]. With the advancement of information technology, remote sensing has been used over the past two decades.…”
