The inadequate disposal of organic waste generated in insect biofactories breeding biological agents may become a potential environmental problem. The use of Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) may play an important role in the circular economy of this process, transforming waste into high‐quality biomass. Therefore, this work aims to analyse the degradation of organic residues of Ephestia kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) production using the black soldier fly. Four types of waste from the moth breeding process were evaluated: residues of the meal diet when moth larvae were in the last instar; residues of the meal diet when completing the cycle; residues formed by webs in the pupation process mixed with residual exoskeleton, and residues of dead adults. These residues were tested in isolation and in mixtures of 50%, using as control a standard diet composed of chicken feed. Survival rate, development time, emerged adults, weight, size, residue reduction, and bioconversion were evaluated. The residue used in diets affected the total development time of H. illucens. The mean number of survivors differed from 87% to 74% for larvae that reached the pre‐pupal stage. The viability of pre‐pupae to adult stage ranged from 54% to 6% for residue treatments and 97% for the control. Differences in the growth and weight gain of larvae were significantly different. The rate of residue reduction from 54% to 80% and bioconversion into larval biomass were satisfactory. However, regarding adult emergence, the numbers show variations, indicating that certain residues are not suitable for the maintenance of fly breeding.

Nusantara Bioscience 14: 188-194. Alternative food sources in fish farming besides pelleted feed are generally used, but many have also used biotic materials, larvae of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens L.). Maggot stadia larvae have a high protein content of more than 19%, could be mass-produced, are low-priced, and has a fast growth time. Therefore, high levels of protein and nutrients in maggots can be increased through suitable semi-artificial formulations. The purpose of this study was to determine the nutritional value of the semi-artificial feed recipe given and to determine the effectiveness of the semi-artificial feed recipe in increasing the nutritional value and survival of larvae. Data analysis used qualitative analysis with descriptive analysis method and quantitative analysis by determining the amount of increased nutritional value of H. illucens. The research method was carried out in several stages, including (i) insect rearing obtained 2nd generation of tillers (F2); (ii) manufacture of semi-artificial feed recipes; (iii) calculation of insect survival; (iv) measurement of larval mass weight after treatment; (v) testing of nutritional content value includes water content, fat content and protein content of H. illucens after treatment. Results of the evaluation larval survival after treatment were effective enough 100%, larval instar life phase was between 28-32 days, while the highest increase in the nutritional value of larvae water content was 45.90%, fat content 7.25%, and protein content 45.95%, the average increase in mass weight of larvae was 12.50%.

Further advancing black soldier fly (BSF) farming for waste valorisation and more sustainable global protein supplies critically depends on targeted exploitation of genotype-phenotype associations in this insect, comparable to conventional livestock. This study used a fully crossed factorial design of rearing larvae of four genetically distinct BSF strains (FST: 0.11–0.35) on three nutritionally different diets (poultry feed, food waste, poultry manure) to investigate genotype-by-environment interactions. Phenotypic responses included larval growth dynamics over time, weight at harvest, mortality, biomass production with respective contents of ash, fat, and protein, including amino acid profiles, as well as bioconversion and nitrogen efficiency, reduction of dry matter and relevant fibre fractions, and dry matter loss (emissions). Virtually all larval performance and body composition traits were substantially influenced by diet but also characterised by ample BSF genetic variation and, most importantly, by pronounced interaction effects between the two. Across evaluated phenotypes, variable diet-dependent rankings and the lack of generally superior BSF strains indicate the involvement of trade-offs between traits, as their relationships may even change signs. Conflicting resource allocation in light of overall BSF fitness suggests anticipated breeding programs will require complex and differential selection strategies to account for pinpointed trait maximisation versus multi-purpose resilience.
