Growth of in vitro Oncidesa plantlets cultured under cold cathode fluorescent lamps with super-elevated CO2 enrichment

Abstract: How can one increase the biomass of plants, particularly orchids, in an effective way? Photoautotrophic micropropagation is an effective means of increasing the biomass of Oncidesa orchids. Using 10,000 µmol mol−1 CO2 and a photosynthetic photon flux density of 60 µmol m−2 s−1, the number of leaves and roots and shoot and root fresh and dry weights could be considerably increased, but only when cultured on Kyoto medium rather than Vacin and Went medium. Super-elevated CO2 enrichment and growth under cold catho… Show more

“…Aside from the auxin-related pathway, GO enrichment and KEGG pathway analyses indicated that the DEGs involved in shoot regeneration were also significantly enriched in photosynthetic and metabolic pathways. In fact, several investigators have reported that the photosynthetic rate markedly influenced shoot regeneration in orchids ( Norikane et al, 2010 , 2013 ). In addition, proteomic and metabolic studies of protocorm from Vanilla planifolia showed that initiation of the shoot regeneration process in Vanilla planifolia revealed a close interrelationship between this species and both photosynthesis and glycolysis ( Palama et al, 2010 ; Tan et al, 2013 ).…”

“…3. Perlite has been used with Limonium latifolium and Solanum tuberosum (Xiao et al 2000), whereas rockwool cubes have been used with Spathiphyllum (Tanaka et al 1992), Eucalyptus citriodora (Nagae et al 1996), Cymbidium (Norikane et al 2010) and Oncidesa (Norikane et al 2013). Vermiculite has been used as a substrate for Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Kirdmanee et al 1995), Garcinia mangostana (Ermayanti et al 1999), Paulownia fortune and Samanea saman explants (Mosaleeyanon et al 2004), and glass beads have been used as a substrate for Rauwolfia serpentina (Goel et al 2007) and Hypericum perforatum (Goel et al 2009).…”
