A B S T R A C TBased on enzymatic-like reaction mediated etching of gold nanorods (GNRs), an ultrasensitive visual method was developed for on-site detection of urine glucose. With the catalysis of MoO 4 2− , GNRs were efficiently etched by H 2 O 2 which was generated by glucose-glucose oxidase enzymatic reaction. The etching of GNRs lead to a blue-shift of logitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance of GNRs, accompanied by an obvious color change from blue to red. The peak-shift and the color change can be used for detection of glucose by the spectrophotometer and the naked eyes. Under optimal condition, an excellent sensitivity toward glucose is obtained with a detection limit of 0.1 μM and a visual detection limit of 3 μM in buffer solution. Benefiting from the high sensitivity, the successful colorimetric detection of glucose in original urine samples was achieved, which indicates the practical applicability to the on-site determination of urine glucose.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles have been the center of interest for scientists since many decades. Within the last 20 years, the research in that field has soared with the possibility to design and study nanoparticles with controlled shapes. From spheres to more complex shapes such as stars, or anisotropic architectures like rods or bipyramids, these new systems feature plasmonic properties making them the tools of choice for studies on light-matter interactions. In that context, fluorescence quenching and enhancement by gold nanostructures is a growing field of research. In this review, we report a nonexhaustive summary of the synthetic modes for various shapes and sizes of isotropic and anisotropic nanoparticles. We then focus on fluorescent studies of these gold nano-objects, either considering "bare" particles (without modifications) or hybrid particles (surface interaction with a chromophore). In the latter case, the well-known metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) is more particularly developed; the mechanisms of MEF are discussed in terms of the additional radiative and non-radiative decay rates caused by several parameters such as the vicinity of the chromophore to the metal or the size and shape of the nanostructures.

Abstract-The plasmonic effects of a gold prolate nanospheroid on the spontaneous emission of an adjacent emitter, regarded as an oscillating electric dipole, at the excitation and emission stages are studied respectively by using the multiple multipole method. The numerical results show that when an irradiating light is at the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance frequency of the nanospheroid and with a polarization parallel to the long axis, the strongest excitation rate occurs at the proximity of the long-axis vertex. In addition, if the emitter is at this region, and its orientation is also parallel to the long axis, the apparent quantum yield of the emission is the maximum, compared to the other locations and orientations. Therefore, for this case the overall enhancement factor of a nanospheroid on an emitter's spontaneous emission is the maximum. In contrast, the emitter's emission could be quenched, if it is near the short-axis vertex.
