“…In ͑c͒-͑f͒ the separate Co ͑outer͒ and Ag ͑inner͒ streaks are marked by arrows: ͑a͒ and ͑b͒ completed 150-Å-thick Ru buffer layer on mica, ͑c͒ and ͑d͒ 60 Å Co 43 Ag 57 deposited at HT ͑450°C͒, ͑e͒ and ͑f͒ 380 Å Co 43 Ag 57 at HT, ͑g͒ and ͑h͒ 60 Å Co 43 Ag 57 deposited at LT ͑0°C͒, and ͑i͒ and ͑j͒ 380 Å Co 43 Ag 57 at LT. to the Co bulk value over the first 20 Å. 11,12 This is evidence of complete Ag and Co segregation as will be confirmed by x-ray and TEM measurements presented below.…”

“…3 It can be understood that the magnetic properties of a particular multilayer system are closely associated with its crystallography and microstructural characteristics, such as quality of buffer layer, thickness of individual layers, structural variation of epitaxial films, interfacial states between individual layers, chemical interaction between the different species, and distribution of stressstrain fields, etc. l'A The magnetic properties, especially the unusual perpendicular magnetic anisotropy exhibited by some of these multilayers, are particularly interesting for magnetic fundamental studies and for applications to recording media in relation to high density magnetic recording.…”

“…These results are in good agreement with RHEED studies. 7,12 Note here that the observed Co-Co bond length is the average over the whole film so that one cannot simply distinguish whether the first ͑bottom͒ layer retains the large in-plane expansion during further film growth. The precise EXAFS analyses for the 2 ML sample show, however, that the difference in the in-plane bond lengths of the first and second layers is rather small, suggesting a structural change in the whole film.…”

“…Distance R (Å ) 12 as-deposited 3 ML Co thin film is relaxed by Ru capping and finally vanishes with 4 MLE-Ru capping. Although the same result was also obtained from the 2 ML sample, the Co-Co bond length is not affected by the Ru capping in the 6 ML sample ͑figures not shown͒.…”
