Growth, mortality and stock status of mullets (Mugilidae) in Chilika Lake, India

Abstract: The growth, mortality and stock status of grey mullets Chelon parsia (Ham. 1822), Chelon planiceps (Val. 1836) and Mugil cephalus (Linn. 1758) were investigated during December 2010 to November 2011 from Chilika Lake, Asia, largest brackish water lake. The length‐based analysis, using length frequency data collected from fish landing centres, formed the basic study methodology. Growth function and population parameters were studied using FAO‐ICLARM Stock Assessment Tools‐II (FiSAT‐II). The von Bertalanffy grow… Show more

“…The Sundarbans ecosystem is the nursery ground and the maximum length of Acanthopagrus latus and Lates calcarifer were found to be 32 and 49 cm respectively, which indicates higher growth coefficient and lower asymptotic length. Growth rates of K (growth co-efficient), L (asymptotic length) and the maximum age (t max ) of the Chelon parsia found 0.98yr -1 , 32.1 cm and 3+ years respectively in Chilika Lake, Odisha state, India [35]. Growth rates of K (growth co-efficient), L (asymptotic length) and the maximum age (t max ) of the Otolithoides pama were found 0.98 yr -1 , 40.9 cm and 3.06 years respectively in Thanlwin River mouth, Mon State, Myanmar [36].…”

“…Grey mullets (Mugilidae) are the most important commercial fish species in the Köyceğiz Lagoon. There are five grey mullet species in the Köyceğiz Lagoon, namely: golden grey mullet, Chelon auratus (Risso, 1810), leaping mullet, Chelon saliens (Risso, 1810), thicklip grey mullet, water bodies (Arruda et al 1991, Hotos et al 2000, Hoşsucu 2001a, Fazli et al 2008a, Kraljević et al 2011, Saoudi and Aoun 2014, Tulkani 2017, Panda et al 2018.…”

“…The values of Ǿ for O. ruber varied from 2.61 [12] to 3.24 [11], and the estimate obtained in our study (3.23) compares with the higher end of this range. The variations in the growth parameters of the same species in different geographic locations may depend on several factors, such as the environmental conditions, sampling methodology, availability of food, reproductive activity, the genetic constitution of the individual and fishing pressure [38,[44][45][46].…”
