Growth Inhibitory Properties of Synthetic Chalcones

Abstract: Background: In the present study chalcones were synthesized from 2-hydroxy-1-acetonaphthone and substituted aromatic aldehydes by Claisen Schmidt condensation reaction using potassium hydroxide as a base. The synthesized chalcones were purified by recrystallisation from ethanol and evaluated for antibacterial activity by well diffusion method. The antibacterial activity was evaluated against Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus species, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus using Ciprofloxacin as a standard.… Show more

“…The novel hydroxy substituted naphthyl chalcones 60 a-o (Figure 12) were reported by Kottapalle and the group. [109] The antibacterial activity of Ciprofloxacin was evaluated using the well diffusion method against Escherichia coli, Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus species, and Staphylococcus aureus. The synthetic chalcones 60 a-d, 60 h and 60 k-l showed effective antibacterial action against all species.…”
