Growth hormone treatment affects plasma LH pulsatile release in women with secondary amenorrhoea

Abstract: The present study showed that the administration of GH in amenorrhoeic patients determines the significant changes in episodic LH release in those subjects with normal LH plasma levels and suggests that the action of GH may be dependent upon the ovarian-pituitary feedback action.

“…GH administration to women with amenorrhea increases plasma E2 levels, LH pulse frequency, and reduces LH pulse amplitude (Genazzani et al. ). However, based on this study and in nonhuman primates (Wilson ) the change in LH pulsatility was attributed to ovarian feedback activity due to increases in E2 rather than a direct effect on GH/IGF‐1 on gonadotropes.…”

“…Other neurohormones, neurosteroids and hormones are also considered to play roles in the pathophysiology of weight loss-related amenorrhea [4]. Changes in the episodic release of luteinizing hormone (LH), growth hormone, prolactin, corticotropin-releasing hormone and allopregnanolone have been reported in patients with hypothalamic amenorrhea [5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…On the other hand, GH administration to women with hypothalamic amenorrhea increases LH pulse frequency and reduces LH pulse amplitude but has no effect on the secretory dynamics of FSH 181 . Consequently, short-term GH therapy is used to augment pharmacological ovulation induction in women 20 ' 177 .…”
