Growth hormone: Its physiology and control

Abstract: Growth hormone (GH) is a protein hormone produced by the somatotrophs of the anterior pituitary gland of birds and other vertebrates. The secretion of GH in birds is under hypothalamic control; it involves three peptidergic releasing factors: growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) (stimulatory); thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) (stimulatory); and somatostatin (SRIF) (inhibitory). In addition, there is evidence for effects of biogenic amines (including serotonin and norepinephrine) and prostaglandins at the l… Show more

“…The role of GH in the lipid metabolism of mammals (Greenbaum 1953;Greenbaum and McLean 1953a, b;Winkler et al 1964) and birds (Scanes and Lauterio (1984) has been well established. GH activates lipase which catalyzes triglyceride hydrolysis; the energy from lipid oxidation spares dietary protein for growth.…”

“…Although chicken GH (cGH) and turkey GH have been purified (Harvey & Scanes, 1977;Leung, Taylor, Steelman et al 1984) and the amino acid sequence of cGH deter¬ mined (Lai, Duyka, Souza & Scanes, 1984;Souza, Boone, Murdock et al 1984), most workers have con¬ centrated on the physiology of avian GH (Scanes, Hall & Harvey, 1984;Scanes & Lauterio, 1984).…”

“…However, it should be stressed that the relationship between growth and GH levels is not always consistent (Scanes and Lauterio, 1984).…”
