Rainbow trout (Salmo gairneri) were given slow-release coconut oil implants which contained triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) and were subsequently administered ovine growth hormone (oGH) (either 0.24 or 2.5 μg/g body weight) or saline every seventh day for four injections. The purpose of the study was to examine the interactions between oGH and T3 on several aspects of the metabolism in rainbow trout.Trout treated with T3 alone had higher carcass water content, lower liver glycogen, higher plasma T3 levels and lower plasma cholesterol, triglyceride and protein levels compared with the controls implanted with coconut oil implants alone. Trout treated with oGH alone had higher condition factors, lowered carcass total lipid content, elevated liver lipid and RNA content, and elevated plasma T3 and L-thyroxine (T4) levels compared with the coconut oil-implanted and saline-injected controls. Trout treated with T3 and oGH had lower liver glycogen content, higher plasma T3 and fatty acid levels and lower plasma T4, cholesterol and triglyceride levels compared with the controls given coconut oil implants and saline injections alone. There were no apparent effects of either hormone alone or in combination on liver: body mass ratios, liver DNA content, liver RNA:DNA ratios, liver RNA:protein ratios, liver protein:DNA ratios and liver protein content.The data suggest an interaction between oGH and T3 as regards the regulation of condition factor, carcass water content, carcass and liver total lipid content, liver RNA content, plasma fatty acid and plasma protein content.

Different forms of GH present in freshly prepared homogenates of chicken pituitary were analysed by high-performance gel permeation chromatography and by immunoblotting following sodium dodecylsulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focussing. Chicken GH was found to occur mainly in a monomeric form with a relative molecular mass of 23,500 together with small amounts of interchain disulphide-linked oligomers. No evidence was obtained for proteolytically modified forms of GH nor for a form analogous to the 20K variant of human GH. Isoelectric focussing resolved ten distinct charge variants of chicken GH with isoelectric points between 8.45 and 6.0. The predominant charge variant (pI = 7.85) was present in pituitaries of birds of both sexes at all ages examined (3-114 days) whereas the more acidic forms were not apparent until after day 13. These findings indicate that the chicken pituitary contains different forms of GH, some of which may be developmentally regulated.

Summary. Sex-linked dwarf chicks, offspring from the mating of heterozygous sires with dwarf females, were used in this study. On days 18 and 20 of incubation, plasma concentrations of growth hormone (GH) and somatomedin C (Sm-C) did not differ between normal chicks and those of the dw-dwdw genotype. After hatching, Sm-C concentrations in normal chicks remained comparable to the embryo values for up to 1 week, but those in dwarf chicks were lower. After 3 weeks Sm-C increased greatly in the controls, whereas in dawrf birds it was far less pronounced up to 18 weeks of age and only increased to control levels on week 12. GH was low during incubation and increased sharply after hatching in normal and dwarf chicks. After 3 weeks and up to 18 weeks, GH levels were higher in dwarf chicks, except at week 12 when they decreased to control concentrations.Introduction.
