“…The presence of LH␤ transcript in immature fish pituitary was also reported in another late-maturing fish, the black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus) (Gur et al, 2000). In salmonids, however, LH␤ was not expressed during gametogenesis, whereas its transcript was only detected just before ovulation/spermiation (Breton et al, 1998;Gomez et al, 1999;Slater et al, 1994;Swanson et al, 1991;Weil et al, 1995). Our results suggested that the expression pattern of Chinese sturgeon LH␤ might be similar to that observed in salmonids.…”

“…In salmonids, similar expression status of FSH␤ was also observed. Generally, FSH␤ concentration is high during the early stages of gametogenesis, then decreases during vitellogensis and maturation, and rises again at pre-ovulation period (Breton et al, 1998;Gomez et al, 1999;Slater et al, 1994;Swanson et al, 1991;Weil et al, 1995).…”

“…The GSI increased from 3.5% to 7% over this period (Davidson et al 2014). Previous studies of females from winter-spawning or autumn-spawning strains of Rainbow Trout exposed to ambient photoperiod and temperature conditions showed either no change in plasma GH before ovulation (Sumpter et al 1991;Gomez et al 1999) or slightly greater GH concentrations during the second half of ovarian growth (Holloway et al 1999). The small or nonexistent changes in plasma GH in female Rainbow Trout going through vitellogenesis and approaching spawning is inconsistent with changes observed over the same developmental period in Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar (Björnsson et al 1994;Benedet et al 2010), suggesting differences in the roles of GH during reproduction among salmonids.…”

“…The high increase of 17,20β-P in salmonid during the spawning season coincides with a clear increase of Lh in plasma during spermiation (Gomez et al, 1999). Furthermore, during the complete testicular cycle, Lh or Fsh can stimulate 17,20β-P both in vivo and in vitro, but Lh stimulation is greater during the late testes development phases (Le Gac & Loir, 1988;Schulz & Blüm, 1990;Schulz et al, 1992;Planas et al, 1993;Planas & Swanson, 1995;Vizziano & Le Gac, 1998).…”
