In the present study, a commercially available anabolic implant containing trenbolone acetate and oestradiol-17p was investigated in intact and castrated bulls. Measurements of growth rate, serum hormones and metabolites in both phenotypes, and testicular development and function in bulls, were obtained. The experimental objectives were realized in a 2 x 2 factorially designed experiment utilizing eight Angus-sired crossbred bulls and eight similar steers castrated at 7 months of age. Half of each group were implanted with 140 mg trenbolone acetate plus 28 mg oestradiol-17|3. Body weights were monitored every 7 days and plasma samples were obtained at 28-day intervals from 9 to 15 months of age. In the implanted groups, mean concentrations of plasma trenbolone and oestradiol-17p were 380 ng/1 and 31 ng/1, respectively. Trenbolone concentrations were undetectable in both non-implanted groups, and plasma oestradiol-17|3 was less than half that in implanted animals. While plasma GH concentrations were stratified according to implant treatment, they did not differ among the groups. Cortisol levels showed phenotype x implant interaction; implanted steers and non-implanted bulls had lower concentrations than non-implanted steers and implanted bulls. The implant resulted in no significant changes in gross testicular measures in the bulls but did affect the testosterone response to a GnRH challenge and basal plasma concentrations of testosterone were reduced. Plasma urea concentrations were reduced by the implant, but sex phenotype had no effect. Over the 175-day trial, implantation did not significantly improve the growth rate of bulls, except during the first third of the experiment. In contrast, implantation improved the growth rate of steers over the entire experiment, although implanted steers still grew more slowly than either implanted or non-implanted bulls. It can be concluded that the endocrine status of the young bull is set for a fast growth rate, making improvements via an anabolic implant marginal, except in the immature animal.

Forty-eight Greyface wether lambs, aged about 6 months and weighing 32 kg on average were used. They were allocated to be treated, by subcutaneous implantation in the upper surface of the ear flap, with the naturally occurring steroids oestradiol-17ji (O), testosterone (T) or the synthetically produced androgen trenbolone acetate (TA). Treatment groups were as follows: sham-implanted controls (C); 50 mg O (slow release formulation) (O); 40 mg TA (compressed pellets} (TA); 50 mg T (compressed pellets) (T); 15 mg O + 40 mg TA (TAO); 15 mg O + 50 mg T (TO). Combined implants were placed in close proximity under the skin of the same ear. The lambs were offered, to appetite, a good quality diet containing per kg dry matter (DM) an estimated 12-0 MJ metabolizable energy and 150 g crude protein. Comparisons were made for the main effects of O and the androgens T and TA. Main effects due to O were increased DM intake, live-weight gain (LWG) empty body weight (EBW), chilled carcass iveight (CCW), carcass crude protein (CP) deposition, plasma insulin concentrations and teat length with reductions recorded for the proportion but not weight of fat in the carcass, plasma urea and thyroxine concentrations. Treatment with androgens did not, on average, influence LWG or other indices of growth performance or carcass composition other than to produce significant increases in carcass phosphorus deposition and reduction in the depth of thorax. Significant increases in the iveight of penile tissue and reductions in teatlength were recorded. There was evidence for a greater androgenic effect on penile tissue and anti-oestrogenic effect (on teat length) of TA compared with T at the concentrations used. TA also reduced the weight of the thymus gland, an effect reversed in the presence ofO.Analysis of plasma taken from the vein contralateral to the site of implantation showed that O concentrations were reduced in the presence of TA and T, and that O had no effect on the concentrations of androgens measured. Concentrations ofT and 17 p-hydroxy-trenbolone in blood were of a similar order, which for T is typical of postpubertal entire male sheep. The results suggest that O treatment was effective in promoting growth and carcass CP deposition which was not increased by T or TA, despite the presence of these androgens at biologically active concentrations in blood. This effect appears to differ from the additive effects frequently obtained for castrated male cattle.

Hormonal anabolic compounds are used in certain countries to improve the efficiency of meat production from ruminant animals. The combination of trenbolone acetate (TBA) and oestradiol-17/? (OE 2 ) has been shown to be particularly effective in stimulating growth in cattle (e.g. Galbraith & Topps, 1981). These improvements in growth have been associated with increases in nitrogen retention and changes in protein metabolism within the animal. The present study therefore investigated the effect of implantation with TBA + OE 2 on the growth and metabolic response of growing steers to alterations in protein nutrition. METHODSTwelve British Friesian steers aged approximately 15 months were housed in individual stalls and allowed 6 weeks to adapt to experimental conditions. The animals were then paired according to live weight and one of each pair allocated to be implanted subcutaneously on the upper surface of the ear flap with 140 mg TBA + 20mg OE 2 ('Revalor', Hoechst, U.K. Ltd). Their initial mean live weight (±S.E.) was 439 ±6-9 kg. The steers were offered diets containing an estimated 107 MJ metabolizable energy per day and differing in rumen degradable (RDP) and undegradable (UDP) protein as follows: day 0-28 (period A), 0-86 and 0-18; day 29-56 (period B) 0-99 and 0-51; day 57-84 (period C) 0-86 and 0-18. The diets were based on grass silage, bruised barley and sugar-beet pulp in the ratio in the dry matter of 1 -0:0-65:0-65 respectively (periods A and C). The diet was supplemented in period B with a mixture (ratio 1:1) of soya-bean meal and white fish meal. The rumen degradability of this mixture was determined by Dacron bag technique utilizing a 12 h incubation in the rumen of a fistulated cow.
