Growth, Fecundity, and Mortality of Paddlefish in Louisiana

Abstract: Growth, mortality, fecundity, egg diameter, and age at maturity were determined from samples of 270 paddlefish Polyodon spathula collected from the Atchafalaya River basin and Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, during a commercial harvest moratorium from 1987 to 1989. Early growth of paddlefish determined from back-calculation of annular measurements on dentary cross sections was high relative to paddlefish populations in the upper Mississippi River drainage; lengths of age-1 fish ranged from 411 to 455 mm in eye-… Show more

“…The compressed life history for Grand Lake stock paddlefish is similar to that reported for Louisiana paddlefish by Reed et al (1992), where high natural mortality resulted in maximum ages being less than 15 years. Other southern populations show similarly short lifespans (Paukert and Fisher, 2001).…”

“…Acipenserids and paddlefish Polyodon spathula ), as they exhibit different life history strategies. For instance, female bowfin mature at a relatively early age (3 to 4 years) and spawn annually, whereas female sturgeon and paddlefish mature much later and have spawning periodicities of several years (Reed et al., 1992; Birstein, 1993; Boreman, 1997). In addition, susceptibility of bowfin to the effects of harvest may be minimized because they are not as long‐lived as other species commercially harvested for roe.…”

“…Female paddlefish in Lake Francis Case reached sexual maturity at a younger age (age 11) than paddlefish in Lake Sakakawea (age 15, Scarnecchia et al 2007), but reached maturity at an older age than females in Kentucky Lake (ages 8-10, Hoffnagle and Timmons 1989;Scholten and Bettoli 2005), Louisiana (age 9, Reed et al 1992), and the Alabama River drainage (age 6, Lein and DeVries). Paddlefish age at sexual maturity increases with latitude, which may be explained by higher growth rates at southern latitudes (Reed et al 1992).…”
