Growth Enhancement of Dunaliella salina by Microbubble Induced Airlift Loop Bioreactor (ALB)—The Relation between Mass Transfer and Growth Rate

Abstract: The efficiency of a novel microalgal culture system (an airlift loop bioreactor [ALB] engaged with a fluidic oscillator to produce microbubbles) is compared with both a conventional ALB (producing fine bubbles without the fluidic oscillator) and non-aerated flask culture. The impact of CO 2 mass transfer on Dunaliella salina growth is assessed, through varying the gas (5% CO 2 , 95% N 2 ) dosing flow rate. The results showed that approximately 6 -8 times higher chlorophyll content was achieved in the aerated A… Show more

“…This figure shows that the cells entered the exponential phase after about 30 hr and reached the stationary phase at about 100 hr. The specific growth rate calculated on the basis of the cell count was 0.55 day −1 , which was higher than the values reported for autotrophic growth of D. salina (0.12 compared with 0.55 day −1 ). This value was also more than the specific growth rate reported before for mixotrophic cultivation of D. salina (0.33 compared with 0.55 day −1 ) on glycerol …”

“…For finebubble dosing, the area marked as red frame was placed with a Y-junction. or Equation (3) (for NaHCO 3 medium and algal medium) [17]. [Na + ] in Equation (3) particularly means the concentration of Na + obtained from NaHCO 3 .…”
