Coccinia abyssinica (Lam.) Cogn. (local name anchote) is a tuber crop that belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and it is cultivated for food and medicinal uses. It has relatively high quality of nutrient composition compared to other tuber crops, and is considered as the leading proteinous root crop with a high calcium content. Therefore, cooked anchote tubers are highly recommended for patients with broken or fractured bones. Anchote also contains alkaloids, phenols, tannins, flavonoids, and saponins. Although anchote is principally cultivated for its tubers, farmers prefer propagation by seeds as they are easy to store. Farmers select high-quality fruits for future seeds, based on the size of fruits and tubers. Since diseases and pests rarely affect the tubers, protection is not common. However, the fruit fly can damage the fruits, which predisposes them to decay. Although anchote has very high potential as a food security crop, it is neglected and underutilized and has received very limited research attention. Research published so far covers its ethnobotany, nutritional and anti-nutritional composition, traditional methods of reproduction, in vitro reproduction, somatic embryogenesis, anther breeding, and morphological and molecular genetic diversity. This article includes an analysis of previous and current research achievements, presents findings in a comprehensive way, and suggests future direction in crop improvement using biotechnological tools.

Root and tuber crops have potential contribution to the global food system in terms of food and nutrition security.They also contribute a major share in the traditional food systems of many people in Ethiopia. Anchote (Cocciniaabyssinica) is one of tuberous crops endemic in Ethiopia and originating from Southwestern parts of the country, particularly in East Wollega Zone of Oromia Region. The crop total yield is about 150-180 quintals per hectare. Nutritionally, anchote is a good source of carbohydrates, proteins, minerals and fibers. Its protein content is by far greater than other root crops and also contains adequate quality of essential amino acids. Despite its nutritional value and potential productivity, little attention is given to anchote to promote and develop as food crop. Furthermore, the crop has advantages in human nutrition, animal feed, medicinal, social/cultural, economic and industrial raw material; that makes it important food crop. Anchote is traditionally processed by boiling. When required, further processing (cooking) may also be applied prior to consumption. Except anchote stew (locally called "ittooancootee"), there is no value added commercial product produced from the crop. Therefore, the crop should be well adapted, promoted, researched and improved to support food security problem reduction and to alleviate malnutrition for the fast growing population of the country.

Anchote is one of the root crops grown in southwestern parts of Ethiopia. Even though market participation has got a due attention by government, smallholder farmers' participation in fair market is still below the requirements. This study aims to identify determinants of smallholder anchote farmers' market participation decision and their level of participation. Both primary and secondary data were collected from 162 randomly selected anchote farmers. Descriptive statistics and heckman two stage models were used to analyze the data. The econometric model result revealed that decision of anchote market participation were significantly determined by quantity of anchote produced, access to extension service, age of household head, ownership of transportation facilities and lagged price. On the other hand, the extent of anchote market participation were significantly determined by sex of household head, quantity of anchote produced, access to market information, income from other crops and family size. Therefore, enhancing farmers' access to market information, boosting the production and productivity of anchote through better extension services and infrastructures, awareness creation on gender balanced market engagement and improvement in transportation facilities are the critical points that should get policy attentions in the study area.
