Growth and Yield of Hydroponic Lettuce as Influenced by Different Growing Substrates

Abstract: Four different types of growing substrates, such as, M1 = 60% rice husk + 30% coconut coir + 10% vermicompost, M2 = 60% coconut coir + 30% brocken brick + 10% vermicompost, M3 = 60% sawdust + 30% brocken brick + 10% vermicompost, and M4 = 60% ash + 30% brocken brick + 10% vermicompost were used in this experiment. Growth and physiological parameters of lettuce were measured in this experiment. The maximum number of leaves per plant (21.44) and the highest fresh weight (92.49 g plant-1) were recorded from M1 wh… Show more

“…The seeds usually contain 85-87% dry matter while hydroponic feed is lower and ranges from 80 to 85% but, this disadvantage may be compensated by the increase in CP (Ndaru et al, 2020). The hydroponic technique resulted increase in CP, vitamin, mineral and crude fiber content (Lorenz, 1980;Rahman et al, 2019).…”

“…According to Rahman et al (2017), the fresh weight of lettuce increased as the volume of nutrients provided increased. Thus, the fresh weight of the peat moss-based growing medium had the highest mean value in this experiment.…”

“…It is extremely productive and environmentally friendly. In addition to being a very exacting and demanding technique that guarantees superior crop yield, hydroponics has also demonstrated itself as a great option for crop production (Rahman et al, 2019;Savvas, 2003). Production may be done year-round and anywhere with an indoor hydroponic system, irrespective of soil type or temperature.…”

“…In addition, because plants in these systems grow very rapidly as a result of optimized growth conditions, synchronizing nutrient availability and nutrient demand becomes more critical in greenhouse production systems (Tei et al, 1996). Hence, proper selection of an OF source and media substrate (Rahman et al, 2019) is critical for providing the necessary nutrition to maintain production quality and yield standards in greenhouse soilless cultivation.…”
