Owing to several presumed health-promoting biological activities, increased attention is being given to natural plant chemicals, especially those frequently entering the human diet. Glucosinolates (GLs) are the main bioactive compounds found in broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica Plenck). Their regular dietary assumption has been correlated with reduced risk of various types of neoplasms (lung, colon, pancreatic, breast, bladder, and prostate cancers), some degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's, and decreased incidence of cardiovascular pathologies. GL's synthesis pathway and regulation mechanism have been elucidated mainly in Arabidopsis. However, nearly 56 putative genes have been identified as involved in the B. oleracea GL pathway. It is widely recognized that there are several pre-harvest (genotype, growing environment, cultural practices, ripening stage, etc.) and post-harvest (harvesting, post-harvest treatments, packaging, storage, etc.) factors that affect GL synthesis, profiles, and levels in broccoli. Understanding how these factors act and interact in driving GL accumulation in the edible parts is essential for developing new broccoli cultivars with improved health-promoting bioactivity. In this regard, any systematic and comprehensive review outlining the effects of pre-and post-harvest factors on the accumulation of GLs in broccoli is not yet available. Thus, the goal of this paper is to fill this gap by giving a synoptic overview of the most relevant and recent literature. The existence of substantial cultivar-to-cultivar variation in GL content in response to pre-harvest factors and post-harvest manipulations has been highlighted and discussed. The paper also stresses the need for adapting particular pre-and post-harvest procedures for each particular genotype in order to maintain nutritious, fresh-like quality throughout the broccoli value chain.

La ingesta diaria de hortalizas se relaciona con menor riesgo de cáncer, diabetes, enfermedades coronarias y obesidad, pero partes de estos alimentos como cáscaras, tallos y hojas no son reutilizadas, aumentando los desperdicios e impactando negativamente al medio ambiente. El objetivo de este trabajo fue establecer el valor nutricional de hojas y tallos de apio, betarraga y brócoli del Mercado Mayorista Lo Valledor en Santiago de Chile. Un total de 6 muestras se recolectaron desde puntos de ventas del Mercado Mayorista, 3 de hojas de hortalizas (apio, betarraga y brócoli) y 3 de tallos (apio, betarraga y brócoli). La recolección, preparación y entrega de las mismas se realizaron de acuerdo a protocolos indicados por el laboratorio encargado de realizar los análisis nutricionales. Las hojas de betarraga presentaron mayor contenido de proteínas (2,6 g), fibra dietética total (4,5 g) y fibra dietética insoluble (3,3 g) que los tallos, pero estos aportan más carbohidratos (7 g). Las hojas de apio tienen más calorías (20,4 kcal), proteínas (2,4 g), fibra dietética total (7,4 g), fibra dietética soluble (1,3 g) y fibra dietética insoluble (5,3 g) aunque los tallos presentan un contenido superior de carbohidratos (4,1 g). Finalmente, las hojas de brócoli destacan por su contenido de carbohidratos (9,0 g), proteínas (2,5 g), fibra dietética total (10,4 g) y fibra dietética insoluble (7,9 g). De acuerdo al valor nutricional obtenido, estos excedentes son una opción de alimento en la dieta diaria de las personas y su valorización debe ser contemplada

Effect of zeolite on the growth and yield of broccoli in the dry season

Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica Plenck) growth and yield are impacted in warmer climates, especially during the dry season. Broccoli gives low yield and quality although it is heat-tolerant cultivars. Zeolite is an organic material recognized as suitable for dry season plant growth because it can adsorb cations, nutrients and water and release on demand from the plant. Application of zeolite in the soil may improve broccoli growth and yield during the dry season. The trial preparation followed a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications involving five amounts of zeolite at 0, 1.56, 3.12, 4.68 and 6.24 t ha-1 using broccoli cultivar ‘Top Green’. Results showed that zeolite applications of 4.68 and 6.24 t ha-1 improved growth and yield parameters including plant width, stem diameter, time to 50% flowering and harvest, head diameter and head weight better than the other treatments. Application of zeolite at 6.24 t ha-1 gave high total broccoli yield of 8.45 t ha-1 but not significantly different (p?0.05) from 4.68 t ha-1 that gave 7.89 t ha-1. Results indicated that application of zeolite at 4.68 t ha-1 was optimal for reducing drought stress and enhancing effective growth and yield of broccoli.
