Growth and Survival of Juvenile Feather Duster Worms, Sabellastarte spectabilis, Fed Live and Preserved Algae

Abstract: The use of live algae and preserved algal products was examined as to their utility in supporting growth and survival of the feather duster worm, Sabellastarte spectabilis. Hatchery‐reared 4‐mo‐old worms were provided the same cell densities of live T‐Iso, preserved T‐Iso, live Nannochlropsis sp., and preserved Nannochloropsis sp. over the course of 132 d. A group of worms placed in a water table that received a continuous flow of raw seawater served as controls. Live and preserved T‐Iso resulted in the highes… Show more

“…jaw fish, look downs, trevally, skillet fish, cling fish and sea urchins), but have potential for transfer to similar species within the group. Fan worms were included in this level based on current pilot-level culture implementation using sexual reproduction [21] , [22] , [23] , [24] and regeneration [16] . The remaining groups were classified as having low aquaculture potential as no commercial organisations have reported successful reproduction and very few/no reports of breeding were recorded on the MBI list.…”

“…Furthermore, due to the problematic nature of rearing marine ornamental larvae, many captive bred projects are found in developed countries that have both the facilities and infrastructure to support such ventures [22] . As the second most collected ornamental species within the state of Hawai'i [23] there has been a drive in research efforts to understand the reproduction and life history of Sabellastarte spectabilis to facilitate its future culture [24] , [25] , [26] , [27] . Despite this, propagation is reliant on the initial collection of wild-caught stock and taking c. 200 days to reach marketable size (10 mm tube diameter) [23] , the scale-up of this research to commercial production is still some way off.…”

“…All the kinetic contants were adopted from published data as listed in Supplementary Infomation to fit in our calculation. 14,19,41 The rate of concentration change of oxygen and organic substrate can be calculated using the stoichiometry of expressions ( 4) and (5). By solving the coupled mass and energy balance equations, with respect to boundary conditions of natural settings, we are able to caculate the methane comsumption over time and the occumulative heat comsumption.…”
