“…[31] Nevertheless, this emission is close to the output of commercially available InGaAs diode-laser, which is ideally suited for optical pumping of these Er 3þ :Y 2 O 3 nanocrystals. [36] In addition, the photoluminescent spectra of Er 3þ :Y 2 O 3 nanocrystals exhibited remarkably sharp and well-resolved peaks, indicating that Er 3þ ions occupied well-defined locations in the Y 2 O 3 lattice, namely, those of Y 3þ ions. An aperiodic distribution of Er 3þ in different crystallographic sites (i.e., interstitial sites) would randomize the Stark splitting, resulting in homogeneous spectral broadening.…”

“…In this method, an activator and a sensitizer with efficient excitation properties are doped into the host lattice. When the sensitizer and activator form small clusters in the host lattice, efficient energy transfer from the sensitizer to the activator takes place, and this results in enhanced luminescence [17][18][19]. In this case, the radiative lifetime of the sensitizer must be at least equal to that of the activator; otherwise, the sensitizer would decay instead of the activator, and this would result in undesired emission characteristics.…”

“…The high damage threshold means that this crystal is fit for high power laser outputting. The average Vickers hardness of (1 0 0) and (0 0 1) faces are 629 and 545 N/ mm 2 , respectively, which is larger than that of Ca 3 La 2 (BO 3 ) 4 (490 N/mm 2 ) [12] and Sr 3 Y(BO 3 ) 3 (447 N/mm 2 ) [13]. The moderate hardness is beneficial for machining.…”
