Growth and reproductive traits of purebred and crossbred Romanov lambs in Eastern Anatolia

Abstract: The performance of purebred Romanov (R) lambs and crossbred lambs of Romanov and Morkaraman (M) breeding were compared under a semi-intensive production system. The M breed is a fattailed breed native to Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. Analyses were conducted on data from 168 lambs produced from R and M ewes through laparoscopic artificial insemination (LAI) with the semen of pure R and F1 RxM rams. Pure R, F1 (RxM, ½ R), and ¼ R (RxM x M backcross) lambs were produced. The F1 and ¼ R lambs had heavier (P < 0.05) bi… Show more

“…For the same reason, it can be assumed that the observations of Korkmaz and Emsen (2016) about birth weight and survival rate of lambs, may be related to more efficient vascular adaptations in crossbred animals. Such adaptations could be anatomical (larger diameter of vessels) or functional (earlier reduction of the RI) that could result in more blood reaching the fetus.…”

“…It has been reported that Romanov sheep reported to be characterised by an extremely long season of sexual activity and early sexual maturity, which were favoured by breeders to shorten the mating and thus production interval and increase annual election progress (Şen, 2020). In Turkey, pure breeding (Kutluca Korkmaz & Emsen, 2016) is carried out in the Eastern Anatolia Region, which has the closest climatic characteristics to the natural living conditions of Romanov sheep. In addition, it has been recorded that breeding is carried out in a total of 12 provinces in Turkey (Kandemir & Taşkın, 2022).…”

“…The breed is known for its high fertility and skin with hair characteristics and is characterized by having a black‐grey body colour and short head‐legs and tail structure. The breed has been started to be bred in regions with climatic characteristics closest to their habitat conditions in Turkey (Akçapınar, 2000; Kutluca Korkmaz & Emsen, 2016).…”
