Aquaculture production plays an increasingly important role to meet the global demand for aquatic products and expands continuously. Most mariculture organisms are produced in coastal areas, where space is scarce and user conflicts exist. For extensive cultures farming off the coast at offshore sites could be a solution to eliminate these problems and facilitate further expansion of environmentally sustainable aquaculture. The aim of this study was to examine the biological adequacy of two candidate species for ostreiculture, the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis. Growth rates, condition and mortality in offshore environments were investigated by transferring oyster spat of both species to 4 different sites in 2004 and 2007. Samples were taken every six to eight weeks from April to October and length, width, height and dry mass were measured as well as the Condition Index (CI = dry mass meat •100/dry mass shell) was calculated. Results show that both oyster species grow successfully in a high-energy environment. Mean growth rates are similar to those measured in individuals from coastal habitats (wild banks and cultures) and the CI shows seasonal variation in both species. The survival rate for both species was N 99% in 2007. However, in the previous trial in 2004 a high mortality rate was observed for O. edulis at one single site at the end of the experiment. Differences were observed in the increase of shell length and dry mass between sites and size classes. Taking these results into account site-selection criteria for different offshore locations are presented. We conclude that offshore cultivation of oysters will be successful if site-selection criteria are examined carefully when choosing a location for offshore aquaculture.

-Among mollusc pathogens, paramyxeans are an important group of protistan parasites belonging to the genera Marteilia and Marteilioides. Marteilia refringens and M. sydneyi are of particular concern given their potential impact on mollusc aquaculture world-wide. Aber disease and QX disease are currently listed by the OIE, the World Organisation for Animal Health. After more than thirty years of existence in the scientific literature, these organisms still pose questions and research challenges to investigators. This paper reviews current knowledge of the group and key references. The review was focused on taxonomy, epidemiology, pathology and potential control methods for these organisms in order to enhance understanding of paramyxean infection issues in mollusc aquaculture.Key words: Taxonomy / Epidemiology / Pathology / Diagnosis / Paramyxean parasites Résumé -Marteiliose des mollusques : une synthèse. Au nombre des agents pathogènes des mollusques, les paramyxéens, notamment les agents appartenant aux genres Marteilia et Marteilioides, sont des protistes parasites des plus importants. Marteilia refringens et M. sydneyi constituent un souci majeur compte tenu de leur impact potentiel sur la conchyliculture dans le monde. La maladie des Abers et la maladie du Queensland (QX) sont actuellement répertoriées par l'Office International des Epizooties. Après plus de trente années d'existence dans la littérature scientifique, ces organismes posent encore questions et défis aux investigateurs. Cet article fait l'état des connaissances sur le sujet en s'attachant plus particulièrement à la taxonomie, l'épidémiologie, la pathologie et les méthodes potentielles de contrôle de ces organismes dans l'optique d'une meilleure compréhension de la problématique des paramyxéens en conchyliculture.

Infection by the protistan Marteilia refringens affects the digestive glands of cultured mussels in Galicia, Spain. Effects of the infection on the reproduction of the mussel were studied at 3 sites. Gonad cycle of mussels involved gametogenesis utilizing stored reserves and leading to spring spawning (conservative strategy). This was followed by various sequences of gonad restoration and spawning utilizing the energy from concurrent feeding directly (opportunistic strategy). M. refringens significantly inhibited gonad development in the periods of opportunistic reproductive strategy, proportionally to infection intensity. However, the inhib~tory effect was not significant in the period of conservatlve strategy, probably because mussels had developed storage tissue before the infection progressed. Development of storage tissue was estimated by the abundance of adipogranular (ADG) cells in the mantle. Infection by M. refringens was clearly associated with inhibition of ADG cell development. The heavier the infection, the lower the abundance of ADG cells. Differences in abundance of ADG cells among categories of mussels with different infection intensity were significant at every site. No significant difference in susceptibility to progression of infection was detected between males and females and a similar mortality rate between sexes can be assumed. Evidence suggests that stress following spawning could enhance the progression of the infection.
