The effect of two levels of temperature and natural and artificial photoperiods on the growth and metamorphosis of tadpoles of the American bullfrog Rana catesbeiana were evaluated in an intensive‐rearing culture environment. Four groups of tadpoles at Gosner stage 24–25 were subjected for 50 d to four different treatments: (1) Tadpole culture with temperature control system (25.9 ± 0.34°C) and natural photoperiod of 12.25 h light : 11.75 h dark (treatment T), (2) an artificial photoperiod of 10 h light : 14 h dark using a white LED lamp and no temperature control system (18.7 ± 1°C) (treatment P), (3) the combination of temperature control system (26.01 ± 0.44°C) and an artificial photoperiod (10 h light : 14 h dark) (treatment T/P), and (4) culture with no temperature control system (21.87 ± 1.09°C) and a natural photoperiod (12.25 h light : 11.75 h dark) (treatment N/S). The experiment was performed under greenhouse conditions. Tadpoles in treatments T and T/P had the best growth performance as measured by total length (45.34 ± 1.89 mm [mean ± SE] for T/P, 44.72 ± 2.13 mm for T), head length (17.15 ± 0.67 mm for T/P, 18.34 ± 0.70 for T), and weight (1.00 ± 0.03 g for T/P, 1.14 ± 0.013 g for T). Tadpoles reared using white light LED lamps had reduced growth. The best results for tadpole metamorphosis were obtained in treatment T/P (25.9%), while treatment P presented the highest survival (36.2%). This experiment demonstrates that having temperature regulation is important to achieve better tadpole growth in intensive rearing systems. The regulation of both variables (T and P) is recommended for activating metamorphosis in the final phases of the tadpole development.

Özet Bu çalışmada, en iyi büyüme performansının ve yaşama oranının belirlenmesi için Pelophylax ridibundus iribaşları farklı stok yoğunluklarında yetiştirilmiştir. İribaşlar stok yoğunluklarına göre A (0.5 iribaş /L), B (1 iribaş /L) ve C (1.5 iribaş /L) olarak gruplandırılmıştır. Bu deney, başlangıç ağırlığı 0.013±0.01 g ve başlangıç uzunluğu 7.54±0.06 mm olan ortalama 180 iribaş ile 60 gün boyunca gerçekleştirilmiştir. İribaşlar, %39 ham protein içeren yem ile günde iki kez beslenmiştir. 30 litrelik yetiştirme kaplarında bulunan su (20 litre), oksijen gerekliliği için her 24 saatte bir değiştirilmiştir. Boy, ağırlık kazancı ve yaşama oranı tespiti için iki haftada bir ölçüm yapılmıştır. Stok yoğunluğunun boy ve ağırlık kazancı üzerindeki ters orantılı etkileri gözlenmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda, en düşük stok yoğunluğuna sahip A grubunda (0.5 iribaş/L); boyca ve ağırlıkça en iyi büyüme ile en yüksek yaşama oranı (%90) tespit edilmiştir. Anahtar kelimeler: P. ridibundus, iribaş, stok yoğunluğu, kurbağa yetiştiriciliği Investigation of Growth Performance and Survival Rate of Pelophylax ridibundus Tadpoles Reared in Different Stock Densities Absract In this study, Pelophylax ridibundus tadpoles were grown at different stock density to determine the best growth performance. The tadpoles are divided into three groups A (0.5 tadpole/L), B (1 tadpole/L) and C (1.5 tadpole/L) according to their stock density. The performance trial was carried out with 180 tadpoles with the initial weight of 0.013±0.01 g and initial length of 7.54±0.06 mm during 60 days. Tadpoles were fed twice daily with feed containing 39% crude protein. Water (20 liters) in 30 liter breeding containers was changed every 24 hours for oxygen requirement. A biweekly measurement was made to determine height, weight gain and survival rate. Inversely proportional effect of stock density on length and weight gain was observed. As a result of the study, the highest survival rate (90%), the best growth rate such as length and weight gain were determined in the group A with the lowest stock density (0.5 tadpole/L).

We performed two independent experiments, each with a completely random design in three repetitions and lasting 80 days, on the growth and survival of the artificially reared Thailand frog (Rana tigerina Dubois, 1981). Experiment 1 compared three stocking densities: 75 (D75), 100 (D100), and 125 (D125) individuals m−2. Experiment 2 used a stocking density of 100 individuals m−2 to study the effects of different feed types: frog feed, snakehead fish feed, catfish feed, and tilapia feed. Daily weight gain (DWG) and specific growth rate (SGR) did not differ between D75, D100, and D125, but these parameters tended to be higher at D100. At the end of the experiment, the average final weight and survival rate in D75 (204.59 ± 35.4 g and 79.67 ± 4.04%) and D100 (215.05 ± 38.65 g and 79.00 ± 2.75%) were not different, but both were significantly higher than those in D125 (184.64 ± 37.75 g and 57.00 ± 6.56%). In addition, frogs fed snakehead fish feed showed the highest DWG, SGR, and yield and the lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR), followed by frogs given frog feed, tilapia feed, and catfish feed, which showed decreasing yields and increasing FCR. In conclusion, a stocking density of 100 individuals m−2 using snakehead fish feed is suitable for rearing the Thailand frog under our experimental conditions.
