-Fin spine ageing is the most common technique used to estimate age and growth parameters of large pelagic billfishes from the families Istiophoridae and Xiphiidae. The most suitable methods for processing and interpreting these calcified structures for age estimation have not been clearly defined. Methodological differences between unvalidated ageing studies are of particular concern for highly migratory species because multiple researchers in different regions of the world may conduct age estimates on the same species or stock. This review provides a critical overview of the methods used in previous fin spine ageing studies on billfishes and provides recommendations towards the development of a standardized protocol for estimating the age of striped marlin, Kajikia audax and white marlin, Kajikia albida. Three on-going fin spine ageing studies from Australia, Hawaii, and Florida are used to illustrate some of the considerations and difficulties encountered when developing an ageing protocol for highly migratory fish species. Particular areas of concern that may influence age and growth estimates included differences in fin spine selection, sectioning methods, criteria for identifying and measuring annuli, distinguishing false annuli, validation procedures, identification of the first annulus, and methods used to replace annuli lost due to vascularization of the fin spine core. Key words:Age determination / Sclerochronology / Growth / Population dynamics / Marlin / Tuna longline fisheries Résumé -Déterminer l'âge à partir des rayons épineux des nageoires est la technique la plus commune pour déter-miner l'âge et les paramètres de croissance des grands poissons pélagiques à rostre de la famille des Istiophoridés et Xiphiidés, marlins, voiliers et espadons. Les méthodes les plus adaptées pour interpréter et traiter ces pièces osseuses pour l'estimation de l'âge n'ont pas été clairement définies. Des différences méthodologiques entre des études nonvalides d'âge prêtent à conséquence pour ces grands migrateurs car de nombreux chercheurs de différentes régions du monde peuvent faire des déterminations d'âge d'une même espèce et d'un même stock. Cette synthèse présente une analyse critique des méthodes utilisées antérieurement dans les études sur la détermination de l'âge à partir des rayons des nageoires de marlins et elle fournit des recommandations afin de développer un protocole standard pour détermi-ner l'âge du marlin rayé, Kajikia audax (ex. Tetrapturus audax), et du marlin blanc, Kajikia albida (ex. Tetrapturus albidus). Trois études en cours, en Australie, Hawaï et Floride, sont utilisées pour illustrer certaines des considérations et difficultés rencontrées lors du développement d'un protocole pour déterminer l'âge des poissons grands migrateurs. ABSTRACT. The sailfish Istiophorus platypterus is abundant in tropical coastal areas of the Pacific Ocean. It is targeted by both sport-fishing and commercial (artisanal) fleets in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama. The Gulf of Tehuantepec is one of the main areas of abundance of I. platypterus, where it is caught incidentally by artisanal vessels. The objective of this study was to analyze the size structure and the variability in the catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) of sailfish caught in the Gulf of Tehuantepec from 2000 to 2008. The size structure was analyzed using eye-fork length (EFL) and CPUE was estimated as the number of individuals per fishing trip. Individuals ranged in size from 55 to 240 cm EFL and varied in total weight from 1.6 to 69.7 kg. The size structure was unimodal, and the variability over time showed a negative tendency (F (0.05(1),8,4967) = 6.8E + 8; P < 0.05). The CPUE of I. platypterus showed seasonal changes: values were lower from January to April and higher during the summer, and then decreased again in early winter.Key words: artisanal fishing, Gulf of Tehuantepec, size structure, CPUE, Istiophorus platypterus. RESUMEN. El pez velaIstiophorus platypterus es abundante en zonas costeras tropicales del océano Pacífico. Además de ser atractiva para la pesca deportiva, también sostiene pesquerías artesanales en México, Guatemala, Costa Rica y Panamá. El golfo de Tehuantepec se reconoce como una de las áreas de mayor abundancia de I. platypterus y en la cual se llevan a cabo capturas incidentales en la pesca comercial de pequeña escala. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar la estructura de tallas y la tendencia de la captura por unidad de esfuerzo (CPUE) del pez vela capturado por la flota artesanal en el golfo de Tehuantepec durante 2000 hasta 2008. Se estimó la estructura de tallas con base en el registro de la longitud ojo-furca (LOF) y la CPUE con base en el número de organismos capturados por viaje de pesca. Los individuos presentaron un intervalo de tallas de 55 a 240 cm de LOF y un peso total de 1.6 a 69.7 kg. La estructura de tallas fue unimodal, con una variación anual en la talla promedio de 2000 a 2008, y mostró una tendencia a disminuir en la serie de tiempo (F (0.05(1),8,4967) = 6.8E + 8; P < 0.05). Simulated size-age observations were collected from hypothetical populations with known growth to quantify potential bias in estimates of growth and mortality that can result from size-selective sampling. The population lengths at ages were normally distributed around means predicted by published von Bertalanffy (VB) equations for the Striped Marlin Kajikia audax or Vermilion Snapper Rhomboplites aurorubens. Parameter estimates for the VB equation were accurate when the data were collected with random and age-stratified sampling. Size-stratified sampling caused important bias in estimates of length at age and fitted VB parameters. The bias increased with the coefficient of variation of mean size at age and total mortality. It became more severe when sampling effort was increased to compensate for low sample numbers in bins within the upper tail of the distribution of sizes in the populations. Error occasionally exceeded 100% for asymptotic length L ∞ and 50% for the Brody growth coefficient K. When a random sample was supplemented with ≤10% large fish, the bias was sometimes greater than that observed when a completely size-stratified design was used. Such error could corrupt the reliability of analyses that depend on VB parameters. For Striped Marlins, natural mortality computed with the Pauly (1980) equation using results from length-selective sampling strategies often deviated 50% or more from the values predicted using the "true" growth coefficients. Potential for nonrepresentative sampling of lengths at age should be routinely described when VB models are first published and should be considered whenever the growth estimates are later used for other purposes. * METHODSThis study used simulated size-age growth data from hypothetical populations in which mean sizes at age conformed to known growth. The VB model has been the model of choice in fisheries and was adopted here as true for the population simulations and for data analyses. The main features included the population model of the numbers at age and size, simulated sampling of growth data, estimation of parameters of the VB equation from simulated data, and finally an assessment of the reliability of growth estimates and ofM estimated using Pauly's (1980) method. (Herein, M denotes the true values assumed for the population model, andM identifies the values estimated from fitted VB parameters using Pauly's equation.)
