Growth and gastrointestinal nematode parasitism in lambs grazing either lucerne (Medicago sativa) or sulla (Hedysarum coronarium) which contains condensed tannins

Abstract: SUMMARYTwo grazing experiments were undertaken to evaluate the effects of sulla (Hedysarum coronarium) which contains condensed tannins (CT) and lucerne (Medicago sativa), which does not contain CT, on the performance of parasitized and non-parasitized lambs. The work was carried out near Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1992 and 1993.Experiment 1 used lambs which were either genetically ‘conventional’ or ‘resistant’ to gastrointestinal nematodes and which had a naturally acquired heavy parasite burden (faecal… Show more

“…For instance, plant-derived alkaloids, terpenes and phenolics have antiparasitic and antimicrobial properties (19)(20)(21)(22) and sesquiterpene lactones have antiamoebic, antibacterial and antifungal actions (23)(24)(25) . Since the pioneering work of Niezen et al (26) in New Zealand with tannin-containing legumes, it is known that condensed tannins have anthelmintic properties, mainly through: (1) lower establishment of the infective third-stage larvae (L3) in the host, (2) lower excretion of eggs by adult worms and (3) impaired development of eggs into L3 (27) .…”

“…However, alkaloid and tannin have pharmacological and medicinal potentials that are desirable besides their toxic and anti-nutritive effects that are undesirable [28]. Tannins are constituents of several drugs because of their astringent property and dietary tannins can contribute to improved animal health [29]. The present study demonstrated a time dependent reduction in the studied anti-nutrient factors, suggesting that complete elimination of these anti-nutrients in bitter yam flour may be achieved by increasing the soaking time.…”
