Growth and evaluation of large size LGS (La/sub 3/Ga/sub 5/SiO/sub 14/) LGN (La/sub 3/Ga/sub 5.5/Nb/sub 0.5/O/sub 14/) and LGT (La/sub 3/Ga/sub 5.5/Ta/sub 0.5/O/sub 14/) single crystals

Abstract: growth of large diameter 0-7803-4373-5/98/$10.00 0 1998 EEELGS crystals would depend entirely on the ability to minimize the thermal mechanical stress and thus avoid the formation of twinning.

“…They enable operation temperatures significantly above 500 • C. The ultimate temperature limits are given by the melting point of langasite and the phase transition of GaPO 4 at 1470 [14,15] and 970 • C [16][17][18], respectively. Another important aspect focussing the interest on langasite is the availability of high quality and large size single crystals manufactured by the Czochralski technique [14,15,19]. GaPO 4 is, in principle, very attractive since shows extremely low losses [20][21][22].…”

“…Quartz is stable with temperature and has low acoustic loss, but the low piezoelectric coupling factor makes it difficult to build compact broad band band-pass filters. On the contrary, lithium niobate has a high piezoelectric coupling factor, but the temperature drift is very large, undesirable for band-pass filters used in mobile communication systems [1,2].…”

“…LGT grown under Ar [6] [7] or N2 [8] are colorless, while those grown under Ar + O2 are orange [6] [9] [10] [11] and yellow [12] [7]. After vacuum annealing, the LGT samples become colorless and orange colored after air annealing [13] [4] [5].…”
