Growth and Cultural Characteristics ofCordyceps cardinalisCollected from Korea

Abstract: Cordyceps cardinalis was reported in Japan and the USA in 2004, and its fruiting bodies have recently been cultured in Korea. Herbarium specimens preserved at the Cordyceps Research Institute, Mushtech, Korea were revised and identified as C. cardinalis, based on morphological characters and conidial structures. Most of the C. cardinalis specimens were collected from Mt. Halla in Jeju-do. The effects of various nutritional sources and environmental conditions such as temperature and pH on mycelial growth of C.… Show more

“…This result indicates that MD and CD of the isolates do not correlate with each other on agar culture. Czapek-dox agar (CDA) produced a thin density and the shortest CD in O. longissima isolates, as reported in other Cordyceps species [26, 27]. CDA does not contain an organic nitrogen source, which may be why it could not support rich growth of the O. longissima isolates.…”

“…These results are in general agreement with those of Nam et al (2006), who found that C. sphecocephala grew more slowly on PDA medium than PDBLA or PDBAA media containing of frozen dried honeybee larvae and honeybee adult. Supplementing media with mineral salts has also been shown to increase growth rate of C. cardinalis (Sung et al, 2010).…”

“…This temperature is reported as the most favourable for the majority of mushrooms which include Coprinus comatus [15], Paecilomyces hepiali [12], Paecilomyces fumosoroseus [14] [16], Ophiocordyceps heteropoda [17] and Cordyceps cardinalis [18]. The next favourable temperature was 20˚C.…”
