Informal Social Networks as Intermediaries in Foreign Markets

We investigate how informal social networks can assist multinational firms in their internationalization strategy. We propose a refinement of the Uppsala internalization model (Johanson & Vahne, 2009) grounded in network theory, by developing an intermediate position between an ‘insider’ and an ‘outsider’ for conditions when the transformation of an outsider into an insider is limited by institutional constraints. An intermediary position represents one of the sides of ‘patron-client’ informal networks (Denoeux, 1993) whereby the other side is represented by the ‘insider’. We argue that this setup would help mitigate the Liability of Outsidership (Johanson & Vahne, 2009), a replacement of the Liability of Foreignness (Hymer, 1976; Zaheer, 1995), in the modern networked business world. We contextualize our proposition for the case of Iran, a large rising West-Asian economy with known institutional limitations, and suggest that the informal network of local merchants (bazaaries) could play an important intermediary role in Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) internationalization process. We review the history of bazaaries and make a series of propositions exemplifying possible ways informal networks could influence the internationalization process. In addition to re-affirming the importance of the MNE country of origin (emerging markets, and low psychic distance with Iran), we propose that an intermediary of the Iranian bazaaries will have a positive impact on performance and survival of the MNE's subsidiary in Iran, especially in the case of incongruence of MNE's leadership with Shi'a Islam. Additionally, we suggest that employing the Iranian diaspora may also improve subsidiary performance and survival.

Purpose Performance management (PM) remains one of the fundamental human resource practices in organisations today and is a dominant strategy adopted in managing employees. This paper aims to analyse extant research on PM conducted globally to inform research and practices in an African context. Design/methodology/approach A systematic review of 43 articles published in 22 journals ranked by the Australian Business Deans Council and Chartered Association of Business Schools was undertaken. The papers selected were limited to the past two decades (2001–2021) to focus primarily on contemporary practices. Findings The findings of this review indicate that PM continues to gain attention from African scholars and practitioners, though not as prominently as indicated within the broader global context. The review also exposed significant gaps in current research, including PM issues, theoretical or conceptual development and methodological approaches, which, if addressed, could inform future practices and research foci. Research limitations/implications The primary limitations of this study are a focus on the most recent two decades of research into PM and the intention to direct learnings from this review of scholarly insight towards a focus solely on an African context. Thus, as interpretations of insights are based upon the perspective of how these can inform PM practices in Africa, a direct extrapolation of the findings to other contexts may not be appropriate. Practical implications This review of research conducted into PM globally in the past two decades has identified limited contributions from within the African context. This lack of contextual understanding may well be affecting the adoption and creation of globally recognised PM practices in Africa. As such, there is an opportunity to understand better the complexities associated with PM by embracing theories and formulating, testing and refining existing models to consider performance issues at more profound levels of analysis within an African context. Originality/value This study presents insights into global trends in PM research and practices not previously explored, highlighting a need for more contextualised research to progress Africa beyond current theoretical, conceptual and methodological limitations.

The early adulthood of the Asia Pacific Journal of Management: A literature review 2005–2014

This research represents a comprehensive review of the articles published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Management (APJM) between 2005 and 2014, the journal's early Badulthood.^It provides an overview of the evolution of this body of research across different dimensions: types of articles, international scope of the research, contributing scholars and institutions, scientific collaboration and non-academic cooperation paths as APJM developed as an Academy of Management associated journal. It also analyzes the impact of its published articles on the research field-based on traditional direct, indirect, and weighted impact measurements as well as on alternative metrics-and the journal's performance. APJM's early adulthood was featured by rapid and positive changes in terms of numbers, reach, international scope, scientific collaboration, article impact, and overall journal performance. Furthermore, the journal is currently ranked among the better management journals worldwide and has become the first among all management journals with a declared regional focus. Some hurdles remain and new challenges must be faced; among them, increasing the volume of conceptual works and developing the journal's scope by publishing a higher number of pieces of research dealing with organization and management issues relevant from a global (not only regional) perspective and continuing the journal's general improvement and growth.
