Growth and characterization of photorefractive Bi12TiO20 single crystals

Abstract: Photorefractive BilzTi020 single crystals of high optical quality were grown in a resistive heating furnace from high temperature nonstoichiometric (10: 1) solutions of BizO, and TiO, at pulling rates 0.3-0.8 mm/h at rotation 20-30 rpm along the (001) and (011) Fanning effect in the "fiber-like" BTO sample was studied and double phase conjugation with conversion efficiency up to 8% was observed in a wide range of incidence angles of the pump at A = 0.633 pm for 2 x 3 mW input light power.

“…The BTO:Pb crystal was grown in Brazil [5]. It was fitted with two aluminium strips 2 mm apart biased with 100 V. The band gap of this material is of the order of 3.1-3.2 eV, so band to band generation requires photon energies larger than this value, that is, wavelength smaller than 390 nm.…”

“…A bismuth titanate ( Bi 12 TiO 20 , BTO) single crystal was grown by the modified Czochralski method from a nonstoichiometric high-temperature solution of bismuth and titanium oxides, taken in the ratio Bi 2 O 3 : TiO 2 = 10 : 1 [9]. A sample with transverse sizes 4.5 × 4.5 mm 2 and thickness d = 1.8 mm was cut from the grown crystal perpendicularly to the [001] axis.…”

“…The crystal thicknesses were 0.8 mm and they were fitted with two stripes of evaporated aluminium on each face, one being semi-transparent with a transmission of the order of 70% for the BTO-J18 and 50% for the BTO:Pb at the wavelength of the laser (337 nm). All the samples of this study were grown in the same laboratory in Brazil using the same procedure and raw materials [22].…”
