Growth and characterization of barium copper oxalate single crystals in gels

Single crystals of barium oxalate have been grown by gel method using agar-agar gel as media of growth at ambient temperature. The optimum conditions were established by varying various parameters such as concentration of gel, concentration of reactant, gel setting time etc. Prismatic platy shaped transparent crystals were obtained. The grown crystals were characterized through powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) studies, Thermogravimetric (TGA) and Differential thermal analysis (DTA). The compound crystallizes under monoclinic structure with lattice parameters a = 6.6562 Å, b = 8.0464 Å, c = 2.8090 Å, β= 96.832°, and V = 149.38 Å 3. The FT-IR spectrum indicates OH and carbonyl group along with the presence of metal-oxygen bond. The TGA indicates 17.75% weight loss at 550°C from which the decomposition pattern is formulated.

The measurement of electrical conductivity for the investigation of the number of water molecules present in the mixed crystals of barium copper oxalate and barium ammonium oxalate lattice have been carried out in the temperature range 30 to 450 "C. The dehydration temperature and the number of water molecules removed out of the structure at a particular temperature is estimated from the sharp increase in conductivity at these points. The almost steep increase of conductivity is attributed to the increase in the number of mobile charge carriers H + and OHions generated from the escaping water molecules.The study of electrical conductivity in association with the thermal behaviour has been used to understand the mechanism of conduction.

BaCu(C20&. 6 H2O is triclinic, Pi, with a = 6.5405(9), b = 9.202(3), c = 10.939(1) A, a = 85.46(2), p == 79.22(1), y = 80.45(2), V = 636.99(1) A3, Z = 2, Do = 2.14, D, = 2.465g cm-", R = 0.074, w R = 0.0746 for 2219 significant reflections 2 6.0aFo. Thc barium has eleven coordinations and the coordination polyhedra is a capped antiprism. Six water oxygen atoms are coordinated whcrcas the othcr fivc are coming from the oxalate group. In the unit cell the molecules form a polymeric network. One lattice water molecule belongs to the coordinating water. The barium oxygen distarices vary from 2.75 A to 3.15 A.
