This paper refines, develops and applies input-output decomposition analysis. First, by putting it in an unique intercountry perspective, second, by concentrating on explaining income growth, and, third, by systematically separating the effects of trade pattern changes from the effects of technology and preference changes. The resulting matrix decomposition formula distinguishes six components, and is applied to a set of EU-intercountry input-output tables in constant prices, with 25 sectors and 6 EU-countries, for 1975 and 1985. Macro economic demand growth is found to be most important component at the aggregate country level. The other five components relate to the impacts of coefficient changes. Their sizes are smaller, but at the sector level they are quite large and different between individual sectors and countries. It is concluded that the analysis uncovers a much broader potential impact for national and EU industrial policy measures than the usual less refined decomposition analyses.

PurposeThis study quantifies empirically the induced impact of income distribution and consumption expenditure on the structures of agriculture production of Nigerian economy.Design/methodology/approachThe study calibrates an extended input-output model on a social accounting matrix (SAM) for Nigeria for the year 2010. Moreover, the study conducts a dispersion analysis to identify the key agriculture sectors/subsectors both in exogenous and endogenous setup.FindingsThis study presents an empirical analysis of propagation in the structure of production particularly in the structure of agriculture sector. It combines the aggregate and the disaggregated levels of analysis and identifies the key sectors/subsectors both in the exogenous and endogenous setup. The comparison of both findings confirms that the composition of income distribution and consumption expenditure significantly influences the composition and the aggregated and disaggregated order of structure of agriculture production.Originality/valueKnowledge of interindustry connections is vital in policy implications since the policy makers prefer strongly interconnected sectors to the sectors with poor industry linkages. These connections are estimated as forward and backward linkages, which provide indices to set the criteria for key sectors identification. This study presents an empirical analysis of propagation in the structure of production particularly in the structure of agriculture sector. It combines the aggregate and the disaggregated levels of analysis and identifies the key sectors/subsectors both in the exogenous and endogenous setup.

Οι διαρθρωτικές μεταβολές που πραγματοποιούνται στην οικονομία μιας χώρας συνδέονται άμεσα με την οικονομική μεγέθυνση και ανάπτυξη της. Τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες, οι εκτενείς αλλαγές που παρατηρούνται στην παραγωγική διάρθρωση πολλών ανεπτυγμένων χωρών, έχουν επηρεάσει το αναπτυξιακό πρότυπο των οικονομιών τους. Κλάδοι που κυριαρχούσαν επί χρόνια, έχουν υποστεί σημαντική ύφεση, ενώ παράλληλα έχουν αναδειχθεί νέοι ηγετικοί κλάδοι και έχουν υιοθετηθεί καινούργιες διαδικασίες παραγωγής. Επιπλέον, η οικονομική κρίση που πλήττει μια σειρά από χώρες τα τελευταία χρόνια (μεταξύ των οποίων και η Ελλάδα) έχει οδηγήσει σε σημαντικές μεταβολές στον παραγωγικό ιστό αυτών των χωρών. Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή, που αποτελείται από τρία βασικά μέρη, έχει σαν απώτερο στόχο τη διαμόρφωση ενός μεθοδολογικού πλαισίου για τη διερεύνηση και αξιολόγηση των μεταβολών που πραγματοποιούνται στην παραγωγική διάρθρωση μιας οικονομίας κατά τη διάρκεια μιας χρονικής περιόδου. Ειδικότερα, στο πρώτο μέρος γίνεται βιβλιογραφική επισκόπηση, ανάλυση και αξιολόγηση των μεθοδολογιών που σχετίζονται με το αντικείμενο της διατριβής. Το δεύτερο μέρος περιλαμβάνει τη διαμόρφωση του προτεινόμενου μεθοδολογικού πλαισίου της διδακτορικής διατριβής, ενώ στο τρίτο μέρος γίνεται εφαρμογή της μεθοδολογίας και αξιολόγηση των αποτελεσμάτων που προκύπτουν. Η διδακτορική διατριβή εστιάζει, τόσο σε εθνικό επίπεδο, όσο και σε επίπεδο περιφερειών και περιφερειακών ενοτήτων της ελληνικής οικονομίας, για την περίοδο 1988-2010. Τα αποτελέσματα της προτεινόμενης μεθοδολογίας μπορούν να συμβάλλουν στη λήψη στρατηγικών αποφάσεων που θα στοχεύουν στη βελτίωση της ανταγωνιστικότητας της υπό εξέταση οικονομίας.
