Growth alteration in the auditory cortex of visually deprived mice

Abstract: The diameter of cell nuclei and mean volume of internuclear material p e r nucleus were determined in the auditory cortex in growing and adult mice. The influence of stay in complete darkness for 2-4 months was investigated. In growing mice, a decrease in nuclear size and relative volume of internuclear material was observed after two months in the dark from birth. Prolonged stay in the dark caused an increase in nuclear size and internuclear material, and the hypotrophy of the auditory cortex was succeeded by … Show more

“…Thus, the effect of TTX on myelination in vitro and the inverse effect of a-ScTX strongly suggest that neuronal Na+ channels, and hence electrical activity, are involved in the process. These observations are consistent with previous reports, in more physiological circumstances, showing that myelination of the optic nerve is delayed in animals reared in the dark (31), and highly decreased in the naturally blind cape mole rat"l, whereas premature eye opening accelerates myelination in the optic nerve (32 .,-' R , la, During normal development, electrical activity seems to affect myelination only within a narrow time frame. In the optic nerve, the effect of TTX was more pronounced when the injection was at P4 and the nerves examined at P6, as compared with the P5-P7 time interval.…”

“…In support of this interpretation, the cell body size of neurons in whisker pad barrels is enlarged after bilateral enucleation in mice (9). Moreover, in the auditory cortex, the size of pyramidal neurons and the density of spines on their apical dendrites increase following enucleation (21,22). These effects of enucleation on neurons in S1 and Al are consistent with the hypothesis that neural activity promotes growth.…”

“…It appears, therefore, that somatosensory cortex may be enlarged at the expense of other cortical areas. Atrophy of the visual cortex has indeed been demonstrated after early binocular enucleation in monkeys (15)(16)(17) and after dark-rearing in mice (18). In the latter case, a concomitant hypertrophy of auditory cortex has also been reported.…”
