Growing Triticum aestivum Landraces in Rotation with Lupinus albus and Fallow Reduces Soil Depletion and Minimises the Use of Chemical Fertilisers

Abstract: In north-western Spain, the cultivation of wheat landraces represents the pillar of quality Galician bread; today, a minimum of 25% Galician flour is required to produce bread under the auspices of the Protected Geographical Indication “Pan Galego”. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the rotation of two wheat landraces—‘Carral’ and ‘Caaveiro’—with lupin (sweet Lupinus albus), together with a fallow period, on crop yield and quality, as well as the environmental benefits of rotations… Show more

“…Aggregating various nationwide data may produce a relatively neutral effect value. Therefore, precise delineation of regional scopes helps to more accurately grasp the positive role of GI products in increasing farmer incomes [57]. Similarly, sample type significantly moderates the relationship between GI products and farmer incomes.…”

“…For products that need to be protected by geographical indications, it is necessary to maintain the standardization of their production and planting at all times. However, in the long term, geographical indication products will have a positive influence on the sustainable development of agriculture [55].…”

“…However, long-term reliance on chemical fertilizers to increase production has affected not only the ecological environment but also the quality of agricultural products to a great extent [1]. Although chemical fertilizers can provide a large amount of nutrients for a short period, they can also disrupt the soil pH balance, reduce the fertility of the soil itself and seriously affect the survival of beneficial bacteria and soil organisms [2,3]. Numerous studies have shown a positive correlation between the amount of applied fertilizer and the amount of nitrates in vegetables, the combination of nitrites and amines can form potent carcinogens that are hazardous to human health [1].…”
