Growing food, feeding change: Towards a holistic and dynamic approach of eco-city planning

Abstract: Abstract-In response to increasing environmental problems and consciousness in relation to urbanization, more and more cities are trying to become eco-cities. We can question, however, whether these cities can be considered as sustainable cities. The eco-city concept usually includes criteria regarding energy and water consumption, transport, waste management, amount of green spaces, etc. However, food consumed in the cities is usually marginally taken into account. Moreover, implementation strategies necessar… Show more

“…Historically, the notion of "sustainable city" replaced the notion of "ecological city" at the time of the Rio Conference in the 1990s. Environmental concerns were then linked to urban planning projects and economic, social and cultural constraints [11]; [12]: the main interest was then the search for the well-being of city populations [13]:. Thus, green cities refer to the development of communities that do not exceed the ecosystem's carrying capacity under the term "urban footprint" [13]; [15]; [16].…”

“…The second observation is that systems integration has not yet been studied as a process of change (Vernay, 2006;Vernay et al, 2010). Current research on systems integration focuses on new possibilities for integration (Vernay et al, 2013;Leduc and van Kann, 1999); calculating the environmental performance of proposed integration (Van Berkel et al, 2009); and assessing technical, economic, regulatory and institutional feasibility (Baas and Boons, 2004;Mirata, 1994;Ajah et al, 2007).…”

However, barriers or opportunities for systems integration have mainly been studied on the basis of individual projects and not as processes of change (Vernay et al, 2010). To make realistic assessments of existing potentials, we need to take the current separated systems into account and conceptualize the process of system integration, analyzing how separated systems become more integrated over time.…”
