Groups and Oppression

Abstract: Oppression is a form of injustice that occurs when one social group is subordinated while another is privileged, and oppression is maintained by a variety of different mechanisms including social norms, stereotypes, and institutional rules. A key feature of oppression is that it is perpetrated by and affects social groups. In this article I show that because of the central role that groups play in theories of oppression, those theories face significant, and heretofore mostly unrecognized, metaphysical problems… Show more

“…Algorithmic oppression extends the unjust subordination of one social group and the privileging of another-maintained by a "complex network of social restrictions" ranging from social norms, laws, institutional rules, implicit biases, and stereotypes (Taylor, 2016)-through automated, data-driven and predictive systems. The notion of algorithmic or automated forms of oppression has been studied by scholars such as Noble (2018) and Eubanks (2018).…”

“…Algorithmic oppression is sustained by the unfair subordination of one social group and the privilege of the other -by a "complex web of social constraints" made up of social norms, laws, institutional rules, implicit biases, and stereotypes (Taylor, 2016). Predictive systems that leverage AI have led to new types of inspection, control, policing and surveillance, and the development of government services.…”
