Grouper aquaculture: Asian success and Mediterranean trials

Abstract: ABSTRACT1. Grouper are of considerable economic value in tropical and subtropical regions and most particularly in south-east Asia. Moreover, it is in Asia, where this fish is highly prized, that the grouper farming began in the 1980s.2. The organoleptic qualities of the groupers are not the only characteristics to be appreciated; in culture, their robustness in heavily populated conditions, as well as their rapid growth at elevated temperatures makes them a good species for aquaculture. However, it is, above … Show more

“…Many species, such as Epinephelus bleekeri, E. areolatus, E. malabaricus, E. coioides, E. fuscoguttatus, E. lanceolatus, E. tauvina, Plectropomus leopardus, and P. maculatus have been prioritized as potential species for aquaculture (Noikotr et al, 2013;Pierre et al, 2008). Although India is rich in grouper diversity, species-specific catch data is not available due to difficulties in field level identification (Heemstra & Randall, 1993).…”

“…La acuicultura marina, incluyendo la del mero, se práctica principalmente en jaulas suspendidas en áreas protegidas en el mar o en canales y estanques en granjas junto al mar (6). Aunque el cultivo en jaulas en el mar es la solución inicial más sencilla y económica, una alternativa viable para la protección del medio ambiente, crecimiento económico, y sostenibilidad social como cultural, principalmente en Colombia, es el cultivo de peces marinos en tierra adentro (opinión de los autores de este estudio).…”

“…Moreover, this species has been a popular stock in aquaculture, particularly in Southeast Asia, due to its robustness in overcrowded conditions, fast growth at high temperatures, relatively high price in the market, and the insufficient supply of wild captured fish (Pierre et al, 2008). Global production of this species, including aquaculture and capture production, has rapidly increased, reaching 9357 tons in 2014, with aquaculture production also growing fast in recent years (FAO, 2016).…”

“…Global production of this species, including aquaculture and capture production, has rapidly increased, reaching 9357 tons in 2014, with aquaculture production also growing fast in recent years (FAO, 2016). Although the reproduction of orange-spotted grouper has been fully controlled, the fry are collected directly or indirectly from their natural habitat, which increases the risk in fish culture due to the unstable germplasm (Pierre et al, 2008). With the rapid development of economic growth in Southeast Asia, extensive culture is not sufficient to meet the demand of the market.…”
