“…Surface waves dispersion curves, determined along different paths by the Frequency-Time Analysis (LEVSHIN et al, 1972(LEVSHIN et al, , 1992, and tomographic methods applied to these measurements are widely used to study lateral variations of the crust and of the upper mantle (e.g., YANOVSKAYA et al, 1988YANOVSKAYA et al, , 1998MARTINEZ et al, 1997MARTINEZ et al, , 2000MARTINEZ et al, , 2001RITZWOLLER and LEVSHIN, 1998;VUAN et al, 2000;PASYANOS et al, 2001;KARAGIANNI et al, 2002;PONTEVIVO and PANZA, 2002). “…To determine the thickness and the vertical velocity distribution of the lithospheric layers in the area under investigation in Fig. 1, we consider the data obtained from the surface-wave tomography regional study made by PONTEVIVO and PANZA (2002) and, where pertinent, the large-scale study by PASYANOS et al (2001). PONTEVIVO and PANZA (2002) use the two-dimensional tomography algorithm developed by DITMAR and YANOVSKAYA (1987) and YANOVSKAYA and DITMAR (1990) to obtain tomography maps of Rayleigh wave fundamental mode group (U) and phase (C) velocities in Italy and bordering areas, in the period range 10-35 s for U and 25-100 s for C. Their lateral resolving power is of about 200 km (cells of 2°· 2°).…”

“…In addition, the main differences between shear velocity models obtained with and without assuming causal effects are illustrated by means of additional computations. The same working scheme has been applied to obtain an objective regionalisation based on Rayleigh wave group velocities of the Mediterranean basin (MARTINEZ et al, 2001) and another similar for Italy and bordering areas (PONTEVIVO and PANZA, 2002). In this last case, other classification and inversion methods have been used.…”
