Historically, research involving Indigenous peoples has been the scene of power imbalances between Indigenous communities and researchers. Indigenous peoples have often been put in the position of passive subjects of research rather than participants or collaborators with agency, a situation that the current movement of decolonisation of research and practices in the field of Indigenous health aims to counteract. Participatory research seeks a better balance of input, decision-making and power between research participants and research teams and values participants’ knowledges. As such, it is a particularly relevant approach for researchers to involve community members and support self-determination of Indigenous people. Yet, if its explicit intentions are aiming at a decolonising approach, the socio-structural context of participatory research initiatives in Indigenous communities brings obstacles to the approach’s success. The development and implementation of the participatory project Atautsikut: A Community of Practice in Youth Mental Health and Wellness in Nunavik , has been an occasion to document certain barriers that take place in participatory research. This article describes Atautsikut as a starting point for a reflection on the challenges of decolonising participatory research. It discusses how, despite intentions, structural barriers, blind spots and unexpected contextual elements may challenge the journey towards decolonising research.

During RKO, the GLA is meant to elicit student ideas about research, science, collaboration, and community context in order to inform the small-group work they will do on specific research projects during the upcoming year (Vaughn, et al, 2020). The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly impacted teaching and learning in K-12 settings, as many public schools lacked the technological tools and techniques needed to support effective virtual meetings and online learning. In this article, we explore the impact of the pandemic on Youth Built Change (YBC), a STEM-pipeline partnership between two high schools and a university. In YBC university researchers work with high school juniors to conduct research on substance abuse and addiction in their local school communities. As a school-university partnership which emphasizes multiple types of collaboration (e.g., among students within research teams, between research teams and teachers, between research teams and university research mentors, and between teachers and university research mentors), YBC challenged traditional approaches to teaching and learning before the pandemic. In light of the ways in which the pandemic exacerbated those challenges, and brought forth new ones, this article addresses tools and strategies that were used in YBC to engage students as researchers, insights gained about collaborative work in a virtual environment, and the impact of this year on the YBC program going forward.

This article describes how disciplinary literacy practices were enacted among youth within the context of Youth Built Change, a science based program incorporating principles of Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR). Highlighting two YPAR projects, one conducted in a predominantly Black and Latino/a suburban school and one conducted in a predominantly White rural school, specific examples of the disciplinary literacy practices of Believing, Knowing, Doing, and Communicating are illustrated.
