Group dynamics are associated with weight loss in the behavioral treatment of obesity

Abstract: Objective: To assess whether group dynamics are associated with weight loss, session attendance, and self-monitoring adherence after 6 months of lifestyle intervention for obesity. Methods: Women with obesity (N 5 125; mean 6 SD BMI 5 37.84 6 3.94 kg/m 2 ; age 5 51.99 6 10.81 years) participated in a 24-week group-based lifestyle weight loss intervention and achieved a weight loss of 9.13 6 7.15 kg after 6 months. Participants reported their perceptions of group conflict, avoidance, engagement, social support,… Show more

“…Failing to establish group cohesion and a positive group atmosphere might decrease engagement with the programme, leading to lower attendance and retention. This is particularly important as negative group dynamics, such as group conflict, have been linked with lower weight loss, attendance, and adherence (Nackers et al, 2015).…”

“…Other factors may also influence intervention effectiveness. For example, conflict in the groups (Nackers et al, 2015), establishment of specific group norms (Cruwys, Haslam, Fox, & McMahon, 2015) or degree of identification with the group (Wakefield, Bickley, & Sani, 2013). However, poor reporting of group characteristics in primary studies, methodological limitations of those studies, and the heterogeneous nature of the groups categorised as either having, or not having, particular characteristics make it difficult for meta-analyses to identify mechanisms of change in GB-BCIs (see Borek, Abraham, Smith, Greaves, & Tarrant, 2015;Borek et al, 2018).…”
