We replicated Son, Ellis, and Yoo (2013) and extended Ellis et al.'s (2014) taxonomy of harmful and inadequate supervision by providing and testing cross-national comparative descriptive data about clinical supervision practices in the Republic of Ireland versus the United States. Participants were 149 Republic of Ireland and 151 U.S. mental health supervisees currently receiving clinical supervision. The results suggested that characteristics of supervision in the Republic of Ireland and United States evidenced both similarities and differences. The dissimilar credentialing systems appeared to account for the observed differences, suggesting that Ellis et al.'s (2014) criteria for inadequate supervision need to be modified to account for country-specific standards for supervision. Unexpectedly, no significant differences were observed between the Republic of Ireland and United States in the high occurrence of inadequate, harmful, or exceptional supervision. The results suggested that 79.2% (Republic of Ireland) and 69.5% (United States) of the supervisees were categorized as currently receiving inadequate supervision, and 40.3% (Republic of Ireland) and 25.2% (United States) of the supervisees as receiving harmful supervision. At some point in their careers, 92.4% (Republic of Ireland) and 86.4% (United States) of the supervisees received inadequate supervision--51.7% (Republic of Ireland) and 39.7% (United States) received harmful supervision. On the positive side, 51.0% (Republic of Ireland) and 55.0% (United States) of the supervisees reported receiving exceptional supervision from their current supervisors. Substantial discrepancies were observed between supervisees' perceptions versus more objective criteria of the inadequate or harmful supervision they received. Implications for cross-national supervision research and training are discussed.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to evaluate the internal consistency, reliability, convergent validity, known-group comparisons, and structural validity of the Chinese version of Fear of Intimacy with Helping Professionals (C–FIS–HP) scale in Macau.MethodsA cross-sectional design was used on a sample of 593 older people in 6 health centers. We used Chinese version of Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale (C-ESCAS) and Morisky 4-item medication adherence scale to evaluate self-care actions and medication adherence. The internal consistency and reliability of C–FIS–HP were analyzed using the Spearman-Brown split-half reliability, Cronbach’s alpha, and test–retest reliability. Convergent validity was tested the construct of C–FIS–HP and self-care actions. Known-group comparisons differentiated predefined groups in an expected direction. Two separated samples were used to test the structural validity. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) tested the factor structure of C–FISHP using the principal axis factoring. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was further conducted to confirm the factor structure constructed in the prior EFA.ResultsThe C–FIS–HP had a Spearman-Brown split-half coefficient, Cronbach’s alpha, and intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.96, 0.93, and 0.96, respectively. Convergent validity was satisfactory with significantly correlations between the C-FIS-HP and C-ESCAS. C–FIS–HP to differentiate the differences between high-, moderate-, and low- medication adherence groups. EFA demonstrated a two-factor structure among 297 older people. A first-order CFA was performed to confirm the construct dimensionality of C–FIS–HP with satisfactory fit indices (NFI = 0.92; IFI = 0.95; TLI = 0.94; CFI = 0.95 and RMSEA = 0.07) among 296 older people.ConclusionsC–FIS–HP is a reliable and valid test for assessing helping relationships in older Chinese people. Health professionals can use C–FIS–HP as a clinical tool to assess the comfort level of patients in a helping relationship, and use this information to develop culturally sensitive therapeutic interventions and treatment plans. Further studies need to be conducted concerning the different psychometric properties, as well as the application of C–FIS–HP in various regions.

Adler’e göre insan davranışının oluşumunda kalıtımsal faktörler kadar sosyal çevre, bireyin çevresiyle yaptığı etkileşimler ve etkileşim süreci içinde fenomonolojik anlamlandırmaların da önemi vardır. Adler Kuramı’na göre birey seçicidir, tektir, karar alabilen ve hayatını şekillendirebilen bir varlıktır. İnsanın temel amaçları ve yaşamsal görevlerine değinilen kuramda; bireylerdeki organ eksikliği, aşağılık duygusu, sosyal ilgi ve doğum sırası gibi kavramların yaşam tarzını etkilediği; düşünce, duygu ve davranışların oluşumunda etkili olduğu vurgulanır. Kuramın temel kavramlarının birey, aile, grup ve toplumla çalışan Sosyal Hizmet disiplini için katkı sağlayıcı olduğu; terapötik ilişki kurulurken kuramdan faydalanıldığı ve insan davranışını anlamada geniş perspektif sunduğu bilinir. Teorinin daha iyi anlaşılması ve yaşamsal olaylar içinde değerlendirilebilmesi için vaka örneği üzerinde çalışmanın faydası yadsınamaz. Vaka örneği olarak, yazınsal kaynaklar kadar özellikle gerçek yaşam öykülerinden uyarlanan filmlerin analizinden de yararlanılmaktadır. Multidisipliner bir bilim olarak Sosyal Hizmet‘in sanatla da iç içe olması nedeniyle, sinemada yayınlanmış bir film üzerinden kuramı derinlemesine gözlemlenmek ve yorumlamak mümkündür. Bu nedenle, bu çalışmada sinema filminin analizi Adler Kuramı perspektifinden yorumlama yöntemiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Kuramın temel ilkeleri ve insana bakış açısı filmdeki somut olaylar üzerinden aktarılmıştır. Bu bağlamda Adler Kuramı ile birçok açıdan bağlantılı olduğu düşünülen, gerçek bir yaşam hikâyesinden uyarlanan ‘Yetenekli Eller: Ben Carson Hikâyesi’ filminin analizi yapılarak Adleryen bakış açısıyla film yorumlanmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı, sanat ve sosyal hizmet alanlarının kesişiminde insan psikolojisini anlamaya yönelik farklı bir bakış açısı sunmaktır.
